Ashland, Ohio Filed Oct. 18, 1963, Ser. No. 317,194 7 Claims. (Cl. 240-81) The present invention relates to a lamp with a self-adjusting base and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts hereinafter to be described and claimed.
Generally, there is provided a lamp having a mounting therefor and a shade, the mounting being universally connected to the upper end of an arm whose lower end is pivotally connected, in turn, to an inverted U-shaped handle whose legs are integrally connected at their lower ends to a generally circular relatively heavy collar having at its lower end portion an integrally formed annular flange. Encompassing the flange is the upper open end of a bag-like structure of cloth or the like which is provided with spring or elastic means for maintaining the same upon the collar. The bag-like structure is filled with sand, shot or like loose material and is provided on its lower face with a waterproof material having a high coeflicient of friction whereby, when positioned as, for example, upon a rounded surface such as a chair arm or the like, it will act to remain in such position against ordinary slippage.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a selfadjusting base for a lamp, said base forming a part of the invention.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a novel universal mounting forming a part of the invention.
Still another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a novel handle forming a part of the invention.
A still further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means for mounting a lamp base upon a collar, said base and said collar forming parts of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention, and
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view taken substantially along line 22 of FIGURE 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a lamp of the character set forth comprising a conventional lamp base 10 and shade 11, the Same being shown in dotted lines. A lamp (not shown) is mounted in usual manner in the base 10 within the shade 11 and is powered by a conventional supply cord 12 extending from the base 10 and likewise shown in dotted lines.
A two part clamp 13 is held together by a screw 14 and the lower portions thereof encompass a ball 15 which is knurled at its equator, as indicated at 16, the ball beifig integrally connected to a stem 17 formed at the upper end of an elongated forked arm 18 the lower ends of whose legs straddle an ear 19 formed integrally with the top face of the bight portion 20 of an inverted U- shaped handle whose legs 21 converge downwardly to integrally connect with a relatively heavy collar 22 having an integrally formed annular flange 23 at its lower end portion.
A bag-like structure is generally indicated at 24 and Patented Apr. 19, 1966 is formed of fabric or like flexible material. The structure 24 is open mouthed at the upper end thereof and the mouth is bordered by a hem 25 in which a continuous rubber band 26 extends. Instead of the band 26, an endless spring (not shown) may be utilized.
The lower face of the structure 24 is provided with a surface 27 of waterproof material having a high coefficient of friction such as for example, a rubber or plastic material having an abraded surface or, alternatively, the fabric of the structure may be impregnated with rubber or a plastic material and the frictional qualities may be provided by the coated surface of the fabric itself. The body of the structure 24 is filled with sand; shot or like loose material, as indicated at 28. y
In operation, it will be apparent that the structure 24 is held in position upon the collar 23 by the band or spring 26 but that it may be readily removed therefrom by stretching such band-or spring due to forcing the mouth of the structure to a wider condition. The loose material 28 makes it possible for the bottom surface of the structure 24 to comply with any surface upon which the device may be placed, however irregular the latter may be. It will also be seen that the frictional surface 27 will prevent the device from slipping from smooth surfaces upon which the device may be positioned. Likewise, being waterproof, the structure will not absorb water either into its fabric component nor into the loose material contained therein. The arm 18 may be rotated to selected position and held in such position by a thumb nut 29 mounted on a bolt 30 which interconnects the ear 19 therewith, while the base 10 and its allied structure may be universally moved upon the ball 15 and then locked in a selected position by the screw 14, the knurled surface assisting in holding the device in such selected position.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a collar, an inverted U-shaped handle aflixed atop said co'llar, an annular flange extending from the bottom portion of said collar, a flexible bag-like structure releasably mounted about said flange, a filler of loose material in said structure, an arm pivot-ally mounted at its lower end to the bight portion of said handle, a ball affixed to the upper end of said handle, a lamp structure, and a twopart clamp member having clamping connection with said lamp structure and universal clamping connection with said ball.
2. A device as defined in claim 1 wherein said ball has a partially knurled surface.

A device of the character described comprising a collar, an inverted U-shaped handle aflixed atop said collar, an annular flange extending from the bottom portion of said collar, .a flexible bag-like structure releasably mounted about said flange, a filler of loose material in said structure, an arm pivot-ally mounted at its lower end to the bight portion of said handle, a ball affixed to the upper end of said handle, .a lamp structure, a two-part clamp member having clamping connection with said lamp structure and universal clamping connection with said ball, and a coating material having a high coeflicient of friction upon the bottom face of said bag-like structure.

A devise of the character described comprising a collar, an inverted U-shaped handle afiixed atop said collar, an annular flange extending from the bottom portion of said collar, a flexible bag-like structure releasably mounted about said flange, a filler of loose material in said structure, an arm pivotally mounted at its lower end to the'bight portion of said handle, a ball afiixed to the upper'end'of'saidhandle; a lamp structure; a two-part clamp member having clamping connection with said lamp structure and universal clamping connection with said ball, and'a coating material-having" a high coefflcient of fric-'- tion upon-the bottomface of said bag-like structure, said coating'material being waterproof.

A device of the character described comprising a collar, an inverted -U-shaped handle aflixed atopsaid' collar, anaannular flange extending from-the bottomportion of" said collar, a flexible bag-like structure releasably mounted about said flange, a filler of loose material in said structure, an arm pivotally-mountedat its lower end to the bight portion of'said'handle, a-ballaffixed to the upper endof said handle, a lamp structure, a' two-part clamp member having clamping connection with said lamp structure and universal clamping connection with said ball,
and a coating material having .a high coefficient ofifrictionupon'thebottomiace of said bag-like structure, said bag structure having an open top, a hem adjacent said opening, and a-continuousband of'elastic material in said hem.

A DEVICE OF THE CHARACTER DESCRIBED COMPFISING A COLLAR, AN INVERTED U-SHAPED HANDLE AFFIXED ATOP SAID COLLAR, AN ANNULAR FLANGE EXTENDING FROM THE BOTTOM PORTION OF SAID COLLAR, A FLEXIBLE BAG-LIKE STRUCTURE RELEASABLY MOUNTED ABOUT SAID FLANGE, A FILLER OF LOOSE MATERIAL IN SAID STRUCTURE, AN ARM PIVOTALLY MOUNTED AT ITS LOWER END TO THE BIGHT PORTION OF SAID HANDLE, A BALL AFFIXED TO THE UPPER END OF SAID HANDLE, A LAMP STRUCTURE, AND A TWOPART CLAMP MEMBER HAVING CLAMPING CONNECTION WITH SAID LAMP STRUCTURE AND UNIVERSAL CLAMPING CONNECTION WITH SAID BALL.
