REUBEN G. \VILCOX, OF RAPIDS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO JAMES \V. DAVIS,
OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,665, dated May 25, 1886.
Application filed October 20, 1885. Serial No. 180,449. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REUBEN G. WILooX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bapids, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spurs and Clips for Horseshoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my invention with the toe-weight removed, and Fig. 2 a cross-section with the toe-weight in place.
The present invention has relation to that class of horseshoes provided with detachable toe-weights, and refers more particularly to the construction shown in my former patent, dated January 23, 1883, No. 271,008. In the above-mentioned patent the clip for attaching thereto the weight was formed on the toe of the horseshoe by forging or otherwise made with the shoe in any well-known manner.
his the object of the present invention to provide means whereby the clip is independent of the horseshoe, and can be used with the toe-weights on any of the usual forms of shoes without altering them.
The invention therefore consists in providing the clip with a spur segmental in form to extend around the toe of the horseshoe a sufficient distance upon each side of the clip to firmly hold it in place and form alarger or increased bearing-surface, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the clip, and B the weight for attaching thereto, their construction being the same as in my former patent, the weight having a spring, a, a lug, b, on the end thereof, and an elongated mortise, c, to receive the clip A. When the weight B is slipped over theend of the clip A, the beveled end of the lug b will follow along the inclined groove (1 in the clip until it reaches the perforation 6, when, by the action of the spring a, it will force the lug beveling the end of the lug b it forms means for raising the same when the weight is first placed over the end of the clip. The clip A is formed with a segmental spur, 0, formed thin at its inner edge, for convenience of insetting it between the shoe and hoof, and is provided with nail-holes, h, of the required distance apart to register with the nail-holes in the shoe, whereby the same nails that fasten the shoe will also fasten the spur. The clip and spur are forged out ofa solid piece of metal, there being no welds, and the metal of the spur being so thin that the nail-holes can be punched through as required. The spur can be used on all sizes of shoes, and any suitable means may be employed for detachably connecting thereto the toe-weight.
Having now fully described my invention,
'what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A clip adapted for attachment thereto of a toe-weight, and cast with a spur segmental in form, so as to extend around the toe of the horseshoe at each side of the clip, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Asegmental spurprovided with a grooved clip having a perforation therein, in combination with a toe-weight having a mortise, a spring with a lug formed with a beveled end, and a groove on the weight directly under the spring, substantially as and for thepurpose described. I
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
IREUBEN G. WILOOX.
Witnesses:
