forming means which dicapped people it is desirable to ARRANGEMENT ON SEWING MACHINES FOR OPERATING THE MOTOR STARTER BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to an arrangement on sewing machines for operating the starter that controls the motor of the machine drive which is mounted on a wall of the sewing machine cabinet. 1

Starters which are controlled by a foot treadle that are mounted at knee height on the side wall of the sewing machine cabinet or support are known whereby they can be converted for operation by the knee of the seamstress. Such an arrangement does not sufficiently satisfy the wishes or requirements of the seamstress operating the sewing machine. Moreover, further possibilities of application or use are lacking.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the invention to provide a simple transpermits multiple operating possibilities for the control of the starter. Especially for bodily hanprovide several possibliities for controlling the sewing machine motor that are adapted to the particular impediments.

In accordance with the invention this is accomplished'by a lever in the sewing machine cabinet that is pivotable about a horizontal axis which has a portion that engages the 'foot treadle of the starter and which has at least one coupling means for engagement by an operating element actuated by the operator of the machine. In this manner the different available actuating means can be readily exchanged, so that rapid changeover and adjustment to the requirements whichdepend on the bodily operating capabilities of any particular seamstress who is to operate the machine is achieved.

The control of the starter by means of the arm of the operator can be provided in such an arrangement in a simple manner by a hinged plate which at one end-can be connected to a hinge in the table top of the cabinet and at the other end coupled with the lever of a bar extending through the table top to which it is connected.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following specification with reference to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention in a perspective view of a section of an open sewing machine cabinet equipped with the device for operating thestarter.

THE INVENTION The upper part 2 of the sewing machine with the drive motor connected thereto is located upon the table top 1 of the sewing machine cabinet. The speed of the motor 3 is controlled in a known manner by depressing the pedal 4 of the foot starter 5.

The foot starter 5 is slidingly received in a mounting 7 on the sidewall 6 of the cabinet. The sidewall 6 furthermore has threadedly mounted thereon a support 8 in which a horizontally disposed shaft 9 is joumaled. This supporting axle or shaft 9 supports a lever 10 presenting a lever am 11, at the end of which a roller 12 is mounted that engages the pedal 4 of the foot starter 5. The other lever arm 13 of the lever 10 is provided with a transverse pin 14 which is engaged by the bifurcated end 15 of a rod 16 that projects through an opening 17 in the table top 1 and is connected to a hinged plate 18. The hinged plate 13 is angularly offset at its free end and seated in a hinged support 19 recessed in the table top 1.

On pressing down the hinged plate 18 by means of the arm of the operator, the pedal 4 of the starter 5 is more or less displaced by way of lever 10, and thereby the speed of the motor is controlled.

The lever 10 provides a means for connecting a knee pressure plate 20 which can be secured by means of a screw 21. After removing the bar 16 and the hinged plate 18 the operator can control the motor 3 by means of the knee.

For controlling the motor 3 with the foot treadle 22 that is provided in the different cabinets, itcan be connected by means of a chain 23 with a lever arm 24 mounted on the shaft 9. Thus the invention provides for several different types of operation for controlling thevelocity of the sewing machine motor 3 and thereby the speed of the sewing operation, and this by optional coupling of the different operating devices with the lever 10, without necessitating any complicated modification of the arrangement.

I claim:

1. Arrangement on sewing machines for operating a starter adapted to be mounted on the wall of a sewing machine cabinet and having a pedal, said arrangement comprising an axle horizontally mounted in said cabinet, a lever supported on said axle for pivotal movement therewith and having an arm for engaging said pedal, said lever having a plurality of coupling means, and a plurality of operating elements each operatively linked to one of said'coupling means and actuated by the operator of the sewing machine.

2. Arrangement in accordance with claim 1, where the machine cabinet has a table top having an opening, said axle is disposed below said table top, and said operating element comprises a hinge support mounted on said table top, a hinged plate pivotally connected at one end to said hinge support, a rod extending through said opening and connected at one end to the other end of said hinged plate and said coupling means on said lever comprises another arm connected to the other end of said rod.

1. Arrangement on sewing machines for operating a starter adapted to be mounted on the wall of a sewing machine cabinet and having a pedal, said arrangement comprising an axle horizontally mounted in said cabinet, a lever supported on said axle for pivotal movement therewith and having an arm for engaging said pedal, said lever having a plurality of coupling means, and a plurality of operating elements each operatively linked to one of said coupling means and actuated by the operator of the sewing machine.
