HOLDER FOR PHONE-RECEIVRS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,717, dated September 16, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEHIEL T. MOORE, of the city of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adj ustable Holders for Phone Receivers, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

My invention relates to devices for holding the sound-receiver of a telephone or other sound-transmitting instrument in position to accommodate the listener and permit the free use of the hands for making memoranda, or taking or writing orders or messages as they may be received over the wire.

My invention can be attached to any telephone or other sound-transmitting device without altering or in any way changing the ordinary construct-ion ther eof and it consists in the construction and combination hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the same, and in which Figure lis a side View of the telephone with myinvention attached. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the holder. Figs. 4 and 5 are modied forms of means for holding the arm at its adjustment.

In the drawings, the letter A indicates a metallic plate provided with holes a and a` curved slot c. The armB is pivoted to a suitable support--say to a plate A at d-so as to be free to be adjusted up and down and to be held at its adjustment by a set-screw c, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and carries in any suitable way a iieXible holder C for thel phonereceiver F. This receiver, being inserted in the holder,will, as is apparent,be firmly held in any position that may accommodate the person using the telephone.

It is preferred to secure the arm B to the telephone at D, but it may be attached elsewhere.

The plate A is secured to the part D or other part by means of a clamping-rod G, adapted to pass around the part D and to have the plate A passed over its ends and secured thereto by the nuts H, screwed onto the threaded ends of that rod, as illustrated.

The arm B, as illustrated in Figs. l and 2, is connected by suitable means with vthe fork or switch I of the telephone, which will draw down the fork into posit-ion for the telephone to ring when the arm is in its lowest position. The means I prefer to employ is a flexible cord r, connected at one end to the fork and at the other end to the arm, say, through a hook t.

When the arm is adj ust-ed in a vertical position, the fork can be drawn down by a weight attached to the cord 0' or by attaching the elastic cord or bandV to the hook S.

As equivalent means to the segment and set-screw shown in Fig. 1 for holding'the arm B to its ad j ust-ment on the plate A, I may employ a sliding slotted bolt t', secured to the arm by pins j and pressed forward by a spring c to engage teeth l on the segment of the plate, as shown in Fig. 4; or I may -use a cam m secured to the arm and adapted to bear against the face of the segment, as shown in Fig. 5.

Having described my invention, what I claim is-u 1. In a device of the class described, the combination, with a telephone or other soundtransmitting instrument and a l receivingphone, of an adjustable arm pivotally supported at one end to a suitable support and carrying at its other end a receiver-holder, means for securing said arm in any desired position, and a connection between said arm and the telephone-switch, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination, with a telephone or other soundtransmitting instrument and a receivingphone, of a plate secured to a suitable support, an adjustable arm pivotally supported at one end on said plate and carrying at its other end a clasp adapted to hold a receivingphone, means for securing said arm in any desired position, and a flexible connection between said arm and the telephone-switch, for the purposes set forth.
