S. D. MoMILLAN.
PLOW ATTACHMENT.
No. 555,327; Patented Feb. 25, 1896.
'. .mllmmlligg I 35 UNTTEE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL DOUTHEY MCMILLAN, OF GLOSTER, LOUISIANA.
PLOW ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,327, dated February 25, 1896.
Application filed June 29, 1895- Serial No. 554,436. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL DOUTHEY Mc- MILLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloster, in the parish of De Soto and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plow Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to gages and runners for plows. The object is to produce a device of this class possessing advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
lVith this and other objects in view the invention consists in various novel features and certain combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and wherein like letters -of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views, Figure l is a view in perspective of one embodiment of the invention applied, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
In the drawings, A represents the plow, a the beam thereof, and a the stock, to the foot of which the plowshare or cultivator-shovel a is attached. This share or shovel may be mounted in any well-known manner, as by being seated in a recess, so that the upper wall or shoulder thereof will take the thrust of the work. The fastening-bolt or heel-pin passes through the share or shovel and the stock, also through an aperture a of a link a, which latter is thereby rigidly secured.
B represents the gage-shoe, the carrying- :frame of which is pivotally connected to the stock by means of the link above referred to and consists of two parts 17 79 The part Z) has removably attached thereto, by means of bolts 6", a keel or runner b", which is thickened at its base to form a broad bearing-surface, as at I), also a shoulder b upon which the horizontally-disposed member of the frame rests.
The forward end of the keel and its carrier are rounded up to the heel of the stock, so as to facilitate travel over rough ground. The
part 0 serves as a standard for the keel or runner and is pivotally connected to its carrier, as at 11 This member about midway of its length is given a quarter turn or twist, so that its upper portion will enter an opening formed between the end of the beam and an approximately U-shaped clamp b The arms of the clamp lie one on each side of the beam and terminate in apertured extremities, through which passes one of the handle-Se curing bolts 1)". The member or standard is adj ustably held at a suitable height by means of the clamp, thumb-screw, or bolt b In use, to adjust the shoe for gaging the working depth of the plow in the soil or for lifting the plow clear of the ground, as when moving it from place to place, it is only necessary to loosen the thumb-screw by which the standard is held in position and the keel or runner and its carrier will move in unison therewith and become therebyself-adj usting.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A gage or runner for plows, consisting of a keel detaohably mounted so as to be in dependently adjustable, a carrier for the keel pivotally attached to the foot of the plowstock by an interposed link, and a verticallyadjustable standard pivotally connected to the carrier, for the purpose described.
2. A gage or runner for plows, consisting of a detachably'mounted keel, a carrier therefor, and a standard by which the keel is adj ustably held at any angle, the keel being provided with a thickened base forming upon one of its sides a shoulder upon which the carrier is seated, a rigidly-held connectinglink interposed between the plow-stock and the carrier, and an approximately U-shaped clamp pivoted upon the bolt securing the plow-handles and provided with a set-screw by which the standard is adj ustablyheld, for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this 4 specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL DOUTHEY MCMIL'LAN. Witnesses:
