ARTHUR G. HUBBARD, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED TABLE AND FOOT-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,138, dated February 16, 1897.
Application filed October 23, 1896 To all whom may concern.
Be it known that I, ARTHUR G. HUBBARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Table and Foot- Rest; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to improvements in a combined table and foot-rest, and has for its object the construction in one article of furniture that which may be optionally converted into either a table or a foot-rest.
A majority, if not all, of the portable tables now in use are too frail and unsteady for general use.
In my invention it is the purpose to not only afford a table that will have sufficient rigidity for general uses, but which, when the table is not needed, can be readily folded within a presentable and convenient foot-rest or low seat and in the latter form be used.
I attain the above purposes by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention with the table in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section showing the position of the several parts when the table is folded within the foot-rest. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the table with its leaves extended and the legs thereof folded against the lower side of the table-leaves, the parts on the under side of the leaves being shown in dotted lines.
Similar letters refer to the same parts in each of the views.
A is the main body of the foot-rest, which is supported on suitable feet B, having the interbraces B. A plate 0 extends longitudinally through the center of the foot-rest A and is suitably fastened against and on the inner side of the ends of said foot-rest. On the upper side of the plate 0 there is centrally seated the socket D, provided with a set-screw D in the wall thereof. A vertical opening E passes through the socket D and seriainceoasss. (No model.)
I plate 0, and in such opening is adjustably suspended, by means of the set-screw D',the vertical tube F, on the upper end of which is formed the collar G, in the walls of which is seated the set-screw G. A tube H, of smaller diameter than the opening through F, is adj ustably inserted in the latter at its lower end and attached at its upper end centrally to the under side of the central portion J of the table by means of a casting J. (Shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.) The leaves K K are hinged at opposite ends of the central portion J and when in position with the latter form the top of the table. Under each leaf K there are attached two cleats L L, extending longitudinally of the table and parallel with each other. In the cleats L is journaled a transverse roller M, in which the upper ends of the legs N N are attached in position to swing lengthwise of the table in the partial rotation of the roller M. In the upper edge of the end of the foot-rest A are formed the pits or depressions O to receive and retain the lower ends of the legs N.
Assuming the table portion to be folded within the foot-rest, as shown in Fig. 2, the set-screw G is tightened and the table, including its leaves K and legs N and the tubes II and F, is raised until the lower end of the tube F is nearly up to the lower side of the plate 0. The thumb-screw D is then fastened against the tube F and the set-screw G loosened and the tube II withdrawn from the tube F in the further raising of the table until the leaves K and legs N can be swung clear of the end of the foot-rest A. In this position the central portion J will be slightly above the normal plane of the table. the legs N are then inserted in the openings 0 of the foot-rest A and the part J lowered into the horizontal plane for use. As the legs N are pivoted outside of the hinges P, they support the leaves K at the normal plane of the table, and the hinges P being upon the lower side of the top of the table the aforesaid dropping of the central leaf J brings said center and the leaves K into one common plane and the contiguous edges of the center J and respective leaves K into a tight joint. The thumb-screw G is then tightened, and the consequent rigidity of the central parts The operation of my invent-ion is as follows The lower ends of aforesaid from the plate 0 upward serves to hold the legs N rigidly in the openings 0 and the whole structure compactly. When the table is raised, as aforesaid, suffieiently from the foot-restA to clear the legs and leaves N and K from said foot-rest, the table and its attached parts are turned one-quarter revolution in a horizontal plane before the insertion of the legs in the openings 0, as aforesaid. This is necessary because the length of the foot-rest gives the width of the table.
In folding the table for return to the footrest the thumb-screw G is released and the table portion raised suffieiently by the upward sliding of the tube H to permit the removal of the legsNfrom the openings 0. The table and its attached parts are then rotated one-quarter of a revolution and the legs and leaves folded inward, the set-screw D also released, and the parts dropped into the footrest, as shown in Fig. 2. A bevel R is formed in the upper portion of the sides of the footrest A to facilitate the passage of the leaves K.
A removable lid S, suitably upholstered, is placed on the top of the foot-rest A, when the table parts are folded within the latter.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination of the foot-rest A of a box-like form, and a table provided with legs N, adapted to he supported upon the edge of said foot-rest, and optionally to be folded therein, and a central adjustable connection between said table and foot-rest, substantially as shown and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of a foot-rest A provided with the plate C and openings 0, socket D seated on said plate and provided with setscrew D, tube F adjustably seated in said socket and plate and provided with set-screw G, tube H loosely seated in the tube F, central portion J rigidly seated on the tube H, leaves K suitably hinged to the part J, and folding legs Npivotally attached at their upper ends to said leaves K and adapted to be inserted, at their lower ends, in the openings 0, substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
S. The combination of the foot-rest member A, provided with a central plate 0, a table member adapted to be seated in the upper edge of the member A, the telescoping tubes F and H adj ustably connecting the central plate 0 to the center of the table member and means substantially as shown for adjusting said tubes, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR G. HUBBARD.
