Be it known that I, BARNET M. WRITING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Spokane,in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented a new and Im* proved Weather-Strip, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a weather-strip adapted especially for application to doors or other swinging closures; and it comprises a strip mounted to have a parallel movement on the door or other part and arranged with a spring in a certain peculiar manner, so that as the door is closed the weather-strip is moved against the spring in a direction away from the door, so as completely to close any space between the door and the framing in which it is mounted.

This specification is a specific description of one form of the invention, while the claim is a definition of the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door furnished with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the door looking down on the weather-strip, the view being on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the weather-strip applied to a door and illustrating one of the lin ks connecting it with the door.

(1 indicates a door or other swinging closure, and b indicates the framing, in which the door is mounted by means of the hinges c, as usual.

d indicates the weather-strip, which may be constructed either of wood or iron and which is here shown as arranged along the bottom of the door.

The weather-strip d holds at its lower edge a flexible strip at, fastened thereto in any desired mannerand arranged to engage the floorline, as shown best in Fig. 3. The strip is connected to the door by means of a number (preferably two) of links 6, which lie in cavities 61 formed in the strip, and which are pivoted to the door and to the strip, so as to Serial No. 63.220. (No model.)

mount the strip to move toward and from the door parallel with the bottom edge thereof. The end of the strip adjacent to the inner or hinged edge .of the door is provided with a laterally-turned extension f, lying opposite the inner edge of the door, as best shown in Fig. 2. A leaf-spring g is fastened to this edge of thedoor and bears against the inner side of the said laterally-turned extension f, the spring pressing outward and causingthe strip normally to lie raised, with the links 6 in diagonal position. Now as the door closes the lateral extension f of the strip is moved into engagement with the door-frame, and then the said extension is moved toward the adjacent edge of the door against the action of the spring g. This causes the links 6 to act on the strip, throwing it downward and press ing it against the floor. Therefore when the door is shut the weather-strip is held in active position, and the instant that the door is opened the strip is automatically raised out of engagement with the floor, so that it may be swung free into any desired position.

Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. entitled to all such variations as may lie within the scope of my claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination with a door or other swinging closure, of a weather-strip mounted to move toward and from the same with a parallel motion and having a laterally-turned ex- Hence I consider myself tension, and a spring carried on the door or closure and pressing directly against the said lateral extension of the weatherstrip.
