Description
G. H. PLATT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHIPS BLOCK.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 8,950, dated May 18, 1852.
tion of the lower parts of the cheeks, the
metal hoops or bands being also bisected,
`this view shows the grooves in the periph* eries of the cheeks in which the` hoops or bands t. Fig. t, is an end View of the upper portion of the block, showing the bolt which passes through the eyes of the hoops or bands and secures the cheeks the proper distance apart at the upper end of the block.
Similar` letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each or" the several iigures.
The nature of my invention consists in encompassing the cheeks of the block with metal hoops or bands which it inV grooves in the peripheries of the cheeks. Said hoops or bands being bent at the upper end or part of the block so as to form eyes through which a bolt passes which secures the cheeks the proper distance apart at the upper end.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct blocks upon my improved plan, I will proceed to describe fully the manner of construction.
A, represents the cheeks which are circular, each cheek has a groove (a) see Fig. 3, in its periphery, in which a metal hoop or band B, lits, these hoops or bands are bent at the upper part of the block so as to form eyes C, C, through the eyes a bolt D, passes,
the eyes fitting inrecesses near the ends of the bolt, the bolt` it will be seen secures t-he cheeks the proper distance apart at the upper end as the hoops or bands fit vin the grooves in the peripheries of the cheeks. E,
is a metal plate at the lower end or arse 7 of the block, the plate has grooves stamped in it corresponding to the grooves around the cheeks, and the convex surfaces on the under side of the plate formed by the grooves in the outer side Ytit in the grooves in the peripheries of the cheeks, the hoops or bands also t in the grooves in the plate, see Fig. 3, binding it firmly to the cheeks and keeping them the proper distance apart at the bottom or arse of `the block. Ii, is the sheave or pulley. G, is the hook attached to and turning loosely on the bolt D. The metal hoops or bands are shrunk on the cheeks. The hoops or bands may ft in the grooves about as far as represented by the dotted lines in Figs. l, and 2.
By employing the hoops or bands as herein shown the cheeks are prevented from splitting, the rope is also prevented from wearing or chaiing the cheeks on their inner sides, by forming the eyes `in the hoops at the upper part or end of the block and employing the bolt, no plate is required to connect the cheeks at their upper ends and consequently a larger sheave may be used with given sized cheeks, than can be used in blocks as at present constructed.
I do not claim the metal plate E, for connecting the cheeks, for that has been previously employed; but
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'Ihe employment or use of the metal bands or hoops B, said` hoops or bands encompassing the cheeks A, and iitting in grooves (a) in the peripheries of the cheeks, the hoops or bands having eyes C, C, formed in them at the upper end of the block through which the bolt D, passes securing the cheeks the proper distance apartat the upper end of the block as set forth.
