HOSE-SUPPORTER FOR GARMENTS.
Specification oi Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2'7, 1908.
Application filed November 19, 1907. Serial No. 402,935.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. Posr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Supporters for Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to char actors of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in hose-supporters for garments worn by women and, the invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of attaching means for hosesupporters whereby the same may be secured to the corset or other garment of the wearer, to support the straps or elasticbands of the said hose-supporters which depend from said attaching means.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide a novel means for attaching hose-sup orters for women to the corset, or the like, of the character hereinafter more particularly set forth; and, furthermore, to provide a novel means for attaching hosesupporters for women to the corset, or the like, said attaching means being provided with an automatically operating locking device, by means of which the said attaching means is securely fastened upon the corset of the wearer and retained in its attached relation thereto against any accidental dis lacement; and, furthermore, to provide a evice which when it is desired to remove the same from said attached relation to the corset, can be easily removed from its fastened position upon the corset.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly mentioned will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
With these various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel means for attaching hose-supporters to the corset or other garment of the wearer hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the various arrangements and combinations of devices and parts more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face View of a portion of a womans corset to which is secured the novel attaching means for hose-supporters, the latter being shown in its looked relation with said corset, and the lower ends of the straps or elastic bands of the said hose-supporters depending from said attaching means being shown broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view, illustrating said attaching means for hose supporters about to be removed from its relation with the said corset. Fig. 3 is a face view of said attaching means for hose-supporters, the same being illustrated on an enlarged scale, and illustrating, primarily, the position of the automatic locking device in its locked engagement with the bottom of a corset, or the like, and further illustrating in the dotted outline, the unlocked relation of the same, when about to be removed from the said corset. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section, taken on line 44 in said Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow Fig. 5 is a side view of the automatic locking cam before the same is pivotally connected to the said attaching means; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the said locking cam be fore the same is pivotally connected to the said attaching means for hose-supporters. Fi 7 is a detail section on line 77 in Fig. 3.
imilar characters of reference are employed in the above described views, to inclicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference character 1. indicates a portion of a corset, or the like, which is provided with the usual fastening means comprising studs or buttons 2 secured on one portion of the corset, or the like, and a steel or stay 3 provided with key-hole shaped openings 4 adapted to receive and engage with said studs or buttons 2 to fasten the meeting edges of the corset together. The reference-character 5 indicates the complete attaching means for securing the hose-supporters to said corset, or the like, the same com rising a plate 6 of metal or similar materia provided near its lower edge with an elongated opening or slot 7, by means of which the stra s or elastic bands 8 are secured, in the usua manner, so as to depend or be suspended from the said plate 6. The said plate 6 is further provided near its upper edge with another elongated opening or slot 9. It will be clearly understood that, instead of making the plate 6 of flat metal, the same may be made of wire, or other similar material, bent or shaped in such a manner as to rovide openings or slots 7 and 9,- without eparting from the scope of the resent invention.
T e reference-character 10 indicates the attaching-plate, which is preferably made of fiat metal, or any other suitable material. This said attaching-plate 10 is provided at its lower end with a curved or bent-around portion, as 11, adapted to be inserted through the slot or opening 9 of the plate 6 to form a hinge-like connection between the two said plates, substantially as illustrated in the drawings. The said attaching-plate 10 is further provided with an upwardly extending portion or tongue 12 which is formed with an opening or slot, substantially in the shape somewhat of an inverted key-hole, this said opening or slot comprising a circular olpen part 13 having an upwardly extending s 0t or o ening 14 in conjunction therewith.
Pivota ly secured by means of a pin or rivet 15, or any other suitable pivotal means, upon the said attaching-plate 10, is a locking-cam 16, said cam being provided with an upwardly extending arm or tongue 17. This saidlocking-cam 16 is made, preferably, of flat spring-metal, and before it is pivotally secured to the said attaching-plate 10, is of convex conformation, when viewed from its side edges, as is clearly illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings. When the said locking-cam 16 is secured by means of the pivotal post or rivet 15 to the attaching plate 10, its position will be flat against and upon the surface of the said attaching plate; and, owing to the spring-like action of the said locking-cam, the ends thereof are forced directly against the surface of the said attaching plate, whereby frictional engagement between said ends and said attaching-plate is caused, so that in this manner any accidental turning of the locking-cam 16 upon its pivotalpoint is prevented; and, furthermore, a
depression formed by the raised portion 19 of said arm 17 is forced over one of the raised portions 20 in the portion 12 of the plate 10.
Whenit is desired to attach the hoscsup porters, to a corset, or the like, the lockingcam 16 is turned in such a position, u on the attaching-plate 10, that the circular iole or opening 13 is exposed, as illustrated clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This circular hole or opening 13 is then pressed over the head of the button or stud 2, on the corset 1, and then the attaching-plate 10 is given slight downward pull until the slot or o ening 14 is brought down in engagement with the shank 18 of the said button or stud 2. During this operation, the shank 18 of the button or stud 2 engages with the arm or tongue 17 of the locking cam 16, and thereby forces the latter around until the lower part of said lockingcam 16 covers the circular hole or opening 13, thus preventing the button or stud 2 from slipping down into said circular hole or opening 13 and becoming disengaged therefrom, when by reason of any movement of the wearer, such as bending over, or the like, the downward pull exerted upon the attaching means by the straps or elastic-bands of the hose-supporter becomes relaxed. To remove the said attaching-plate 10 from its automatically locked engagement with the button or stud 2 of the corset, the said attaching-plate 10 is given an upward push, so as to bring the shank 18 of the button or stud 2 in engagement with the lower portion of the locking-cam 16, whereby the same is turned or forced around until the circular hole or opening 13 is exposed, and the same may be slipped over the head or stud 2 and thereby removed, as will be clearly evident. The locking-cam 16 remains in this position until it is desired to again secure the said attaching-plate 10 to the stud or button 2, of the corset 1.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing description of the present invention, and an inspection of the accompanying drawings, that the said novel attaching means for hose-supporters is of such a simple construction, so as to be easily brought into its fastened and unfastened relations to a corset, or the like and, furthermore, that when the device is secured in its attached and automatically locked relation with a corset, or the like, it is practically impossible for the same to become accidentally disengaged therefrom,
by reason of any cause, the friction between the said locking-cam 16 and the attaching plate 10, caused by the spring-like action of said locking-cam preventing any accidental movement or turning of the said locking-cam, jwhich is only moved by the firm upward movement of the attaching-plate 10, by the operator, when it is desired to disengage the same from the corset, or the like.
I claim:
1. An attaching means for hose-supporters comprising a main body-plate formed with an elongated opening adapted to receive a post or stud of a garment,-one portion of said opening being wider than the remaining por tion, a cam-shaped locking device pivoted to said body-plate at one side of said opening,

3. An attaching means for hose-supporters comprising a main body-plate formed with an elongated opening adapted to receive a post or stud of a garment, one portion of said opening being wider than the remaining portion, a cam-shaped locking device ivoted to said body-plate at one side of sai opening, and an arm extending from said locking device, said arm being adapted to be disposed over the narrow part of the opening and the cam-portion of the locking device being adapted to be disposed over the wide part of said opening, said body-plate being provided with a raised portion, and the arm of said locking device having a receiving depression adapted to be brought into engagement with said raised portion, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. An attaching means for hose-supporters com rising a main body-plate formed with an e ongated opening adapted to receive a post or stud of a garment, one portion of said opening being wider than the remaining portion, a cam-shaped locking device ivoted to said body-plate at one side of sai opening, and an arm extending from said locking device, said arm being adapted to be disposed over the narrow part of the opening and the cam-portion of the locking device being adapted to be dis osed over the wide part of said opening, sai locking-device being made from spring-metal and of a convex conformation, the marginal edge portions of said locking device being in frictional engagement with said main body-plate, said body-plate being provided with a raised portion, and the arm of said locking device having a re ceiving depression adapted to be brought into enga ement with said raised portion, substantia ly as and for the purposes set forth.
