Abstract

A dispenser (7) for delivering a measured quantity of a substance, comprises a bulk container (8), a measuring mechanism (10) with an associated measuring compartment. The measuring mechanism (10) is situated to be fed from the bulk container (8). The measuring mechanism (10), upon activation, delivers a measured quantity of substance from the bulk container (8) to the measuring compartment, and then to a cup positioned under an outlet of the measuring compartment. The bulk container (8) can be shaped and adapted to slidingly engage in a shaped receptacle (11). The dispenser (7) can be constructed as a single unit or in a series of compartments alongside each other. Alternatively, a plurality of similar dispensers (7) can interlock together in a bank, each similar dispenser (7) being constructed so that a different material is dispensed therefrom.

Description

A DISPENSER
This invention relates to dispensers intended for use in measuring and delivering substances, more particularly to measuring and delivering a small quantity of substance such as soap powder or liquid from a bulk holder.
An object of this invention is to provide a dispenser for liquid or powder substances such as laundry soap powders, whereby a measured quantity is delivered expeditiously and without waste.
According to a first aspect of this invention there is provided a dispenser for delivering a measured quantity of a substance, the dispenser comprises a bulk container, a measuring mechanism with an associated measuring compartment situated to be fed from the bulk container, said measuring mechanism on activation being capable of delivering into the measuring compartment a measured quantity of substance from the bulk container, said measuring mechanism delivering on activation the measured quantity of substance to a cup positioned under an outlet of the measuring compartment.
The bulk container can be shaped and adapted to slidingly engage in a shaped receptacle.
The measuring mechanism and associated measuring compartment can be constructed to suit operation with a liquid or powder substance.
The dispenser can be constructed as a single unit or in a series of compartments alongside each other. Alternatively a plurality of similar dispensers can interlock together in a bank, each dispenser being constructed so that a different material is dispensed therefrom.
Dispensers for delivering a measured quantity of powder substance from a bulk container to a reciprocating cup will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of one example of dispenser;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the dispenser shown in Figure 1; *
Figure 3 is a front view of the dispenser with its front cover removed revealing an inner container and measuring system;
Figure 4 is a diagrammatic perspective view of another example of the dispenser according to the invention;
Figure 5 is a front perspective view of another preferred example of the dispenser according to the invention;
Figure 6 is a front perspective view of a dispenser unit showing a plan view of a base of the dispenser unit shown in Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a front perspective view of a lid of the dispenser showing a removable cup;
Figure 8 is a perspective view of an agitator of the dispenser; and
Figure 9 is a front perspective view of a measuring mechanism of the dispenser. The dispenser unit 1 in Figure 1 can be provided with a level indicator window 2 for quick visual reference as to the amount of substance in store. The dispenser unit 1 can also be provided with a bracket or other fixtures (not shown) by which the dispenser can be attached to a wall or other support. As illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3 the dispenser 1 has a lid 3 hinged about the top of a container 4 at such an angle as to make it easy to refill. In Figure 3 the dispensing unit 1 comprises one or more (3 in illustration) compartments in which different brands or varieties of powders and/or liquids, can be stored for easy access.
Situated at the bottom of the dispenser unit 1 is a cup 5 which receives the powders that are dispensed from the bulk storage area container 4. The contents of cup 5 can be then unloaded into, for example, a washing machine, and then the cup can be placed into a lower compartment 6 of the dispenser unit 1 to receive the next measure of powder.
The dispenser for measuring powder substances such as laundry soap powders is best suited to being constructed from a suitable rigid plastics material. Other suitable materials such as suitable metals or metal alloys can be used in one or other parts of the dispenser.
In the example shown in Figure 4 the dispenser is indicated by arrow 7. The dispenser 7 can be moulded, fabricated, cast or manufactured from a clear, transparent or opaque plastics material. The dispenser 7 has a bulk container 8 which in this example is of a particular aesthetical appearance with tapered side walls 9. The container 8 has a measuring mechanism 10 which includes (not shown) a measuring compartment. In use the container 8 is filled by inverting it from the position shown and removing the mechanism 10. The mechanism 10 may be similar in type and construction to that incorporated in a cafe bar machine.
The dispenser 7 is shown spaced above a shaped receptacle 11 which is adapted to be fixed to a wall or other surface. The receptacle 11 has an interior shape which is complementary to the external shape of the dispenser 7. The receptacle 11 has an opening 12 in association with a slot 13 into which a spindle 14 of activating member 15 slidingly engages.
The receptacle 11 can be differently coloured or textured to the dispenser 7 so that the V-shaped front face 16 of the dispenser provides a visible level indicator.
The external shape of the dispenser 7 and receptacle 11 can be of any shape, for example, as shown to have a shape similar to an "art deco" wall light fitting.
The shape of the receptacle 11 and dispenser 7 can be chosen to stack for transportation or storage.
The lower edge 17 of the receptacle 11 can be shaped to have slidingly engaged therein a cup (not shown) which is used to collect the dispensed powder.
The preferred embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 5 to 9, works in a similar way to the embodiments shown in Figures 1 to 4. The lid 3 sits on top of the bulk container 4, whereas in the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 4 the lid 3 fits inside the container 4. A cavity 18 can also be provided in the lid 3, into which a cup 5 can be stored. The cup 5 can be removed from the cavity 18 and placed under the dispenser unit to receive substances dispensed. The mechanism 10 can be free turning or be spring loaded.
Particular examples of this invention have been described and it is envisaged that improvements and modifications can take place without departing from the scope thereof and of the appended claims.
