Even with the streaming universe contracting, Netflix is still spending money on high-profile original content. This month's big premiere is The Electric State, the new film from blockbuster directors the Russo Brothers. But we also get new reality shows, episodes of anime hit Sakamoto Days, documentaries, and more Here's our guide to the hottest new shows and movies on the streaming service in March.
Plankton: The Movie (March 7)
Netflix will not rest until every single SpongeBob SquarePants supporting character gets their own movie. This time, it's the owner of the Chum Bucket and general antagonist, Sheldon J. Plankton. When Plankton's supercomputer wife Karen flips a switch and decides to stop trying to steal the Krabby Patty recipe and instead just destroy the world (including her husband), the town of Bikini Bottom's going to need some serious counseling.
The Electric State (March 14)
Netflix is putting a lot of promotional juice behind this one, which means it probably cost a lot. In The Electric State, Millie Bobbie Brown plays an orphaned teenager in a post-war landscape who is crossing the United States looking for her long-lost brother. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo of mega-successful Marvel movie fame (remember those days?), it also stars Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, and tons of voice actors for the robots, including Rob Gronkowski.
Million Dollar Secret (March 26)
Netflix loves the high-concept reality competition shows, and Million Dollar Secret looks to be another hit. Twelve strangers are transported to a posh lakeside estate, and each of them is greeted with a box in their bedroom. Eleven boxes are empty and the last one contains a million dollars. All the person with the cash needs to do to keep it is make sure that nobody else guesses they have it, but that's harder than it looks.
