The ThermoPro TempSpike Pro takes the guesswork out of cooking the perfect chicken, fish, and any other grilled or roasted meat. It connects to both a handheld wireless display and your phone so you can monitor your cooking progress, and offers a database of preset target temperatures for a variety of proteins. Its $99.99 price might seem high for a meat thermometer, but it's exceptionally precise and easy to use, which is enough to earn it our Editors' Choice award.
Design: Up to 4 Probes
The TempSpike Pro comes with a handheld display (called a Booster), a Booster charging hub, one temperature probe, a probe charging cradle, a USB charging cable, and a quick start guide. Thermo Pro also sells a two-probe pack for $119.69 and a four-probe pack for $199.99. The probes in the multi-packs are all different colors to make it easier to tell them apart when in use.
The Booster measures 2.2 by 4.0 by 0.75 inches (HWD) and has a 2.5-by-1-inch monochrome screen, a Power/Sync button, a Light button, and a Probe button. The Power/Sync button turns the Booster on and off and can be used to pair it with a probe in case the connection is lost (the probes are already paired before shipping). The Light button illuminates the screen, and the Probe button lets you scroll through readings when using multiple probes. Probes are represented by the first letter of the color of its handle: B is black, W is white, R is red, and Y is yellow. A color screen would be useful here to show which probe reading is being displayed.
The Booster includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) radios for communicating with the probes and connecting to the ThermoPro mobile app (for Android and iOS).

The left side of the Booster's screen displays the current temperature reading from each probe, and the right side shows you the ambient (cooking chamber) temperature, degree units (Fahrenheit or Celsius), Wi-Fi signal strength, and battery level. A foldout stand is located on the back, along with a USB charging port, a reset button, a speaker that beeps when the target temperature has been reached, and a Wi-Fi pairing button. The Booster is powered by an internal rechargeable battery that is rated to provide up to three months of power between charges. You can charge the Booster by plugging a USB cable directly into its port or by using the included charging hub.
The stainless steel waterproof probes are 4.2 inches long and just under 0.2 inches in diameter. Inside are three sensors that measure internal meat temperature, and there’s a sensor in the color-coded handle that measures ambient temperature. An internal rechargeable battery provides up to 36 hours of power between charges. Each probe comes with a charging cradle that twists onto the front of the Booster charging hub, and you can stack up to four charging cradles per hub.
For comparison, the Meater+ (99.95) lacks a handheld display or integrated Wi-Fi. With it, you can only monitor cooking temperatures from your phone and must stay within Bluetooth range unless you set up a second mobile device to serve as a Bluetooth-to-Wi-Fi bridge. The Weber iGrill Mini ($49.99) offers many of the same features of the TempSpike Pro for half the price, but it doesn’t have a display or Wi-Fi connectivity and only supports a single wired probe.
App Features and Controls
The ThermoPro app lets you set target temperatures, track cooking progress, and send temperature presets to the Booster. The app opens to a home screen with panels for each probe. Tap a probe panel to open a cooking screen with a circular gauge showing your food's actual and target internal temperatures. Just above the gauge is a digital clock telling you the remaining cooking time.
Below the temperature gauge in the app is the food profile setting; tap it to open a screen where you can choose between beef, fish, lamb, pork, poultry, and venison. Tap a food profile to select the type of cut (pork shoulder, ribs, roast, steak, etc.) and the doneness level (rare, medium rare, medium, medium well, well done). Each level has an associated internal temperature that will be sent to the Booster and the app’s home screen. You can create your own profile using the Custom option or choose No Profile if you prefer to just track the internal temperature without setting a target.
The cooking screen also shows ambient, high, and low cooking chamber temperature readings. Tap here to set low and high thresholds for a push alert when either has been reached. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen to view a cooking graph that shows your current ambient, internal, and target temperature timelines. You can scroll through the timeline to see the temperatures at any given time, and at the very bottom of the screen, you can create cooking notes.
Each cooking session is saved and can be accessed by tapping the three dots in the upper-right corner and selecting History. The history screen displays the type of meat, the color of the probe used, the cooking duration, the cooking graph, and any notes you wrote. Here, you can also view FAQs to help you use the TempSpike Pro correctly and get the most out of it.
Tap the settings button at the bottom of the home screen to access the profile screen, choose a temperature unit, and enable an alert when the Booster has lost its connection.
Setup and Performance: Chicken Made Easy, Perfect Roast Beef
Preparing the TempSpike Pro for first use is easy. I fully charged the Booster and the probe, which took around four hours. I downloaded the app, tapped the plus button on the home screen, and selected the TempSpike Pro from the list. I pressed the Wi-Fi button on the back of the Booster twice, selected my Wi-Fi SSID, entered my password, and the Booster and probe were added to the app and connected to my network.
The TempSpike Pro worked like a charm in testing. I used a roast beef preset, set it to rare (124 degrees), and inserted the probe in the roast up to the handle. Both the Booster and the mobile app displayed real-time temperature readings that matched readings that I received from a traditional meat thermometer. The time-remaining clock was spot on, and both the Booster and the mobile app beeped when the internal target temperature was reached.
I created a custom preset for roasting a whole chicken with a target temperature of 170 degrees and it also worked perfectly. To test the ambient temperature thresholds, I set the oven temperature to 350 degrees with a high-temperature threshold of 375 degrees. Toward the end of the cooking cycle, I turned the oven up to crisp up the skin and immediately received a push alert stating that my high-temperature threshold had been reached.
Verdict: Precise Temperature Monitoring
The ThermoPro TempSpike Pro Wireless Meat Thermometer is highly accurate, and I appreciate being able to monitor progress both on the included display and in an app on my phone. In addition, the app offers preset cooking profiles for a variety of meat and fish dishes to the exact right temperature. The Meater+ is priced the same and works similarly, but lacks a display and built-in Wi-Fi. The TempSpike Pro is accurate, reliable, and couldn't be easier to use, making it an Editors' Choice winner.
The ThermoPro TempSpike Pro is a smart wireless thermometer that supports multiple probes, offers presets for several types of meat, poultry, and fish, and comes with a handheld display to help you cook with precision.
