Really looking forward to speaking at Boston Indies tonight! Many indie developers tend to fall into a trap of building in highly saturated, "red ocean" markets, thinking it's the safer route. We did this for years. But as we all know, these spaces are incredibly competitive and it's difficult to stand out. Over the past few years, we've gradually shifted our focus toward becoming an XR focused studio. I'll share why we made that pivot and highlight some of the strategies we found useful that can help when evaluating any emerging platform, not just XR. https://lnkd.in/e9yMeuCa

The mobile gaming industry has never been more dynamic, but with that comes increasing complexity. As developers and innovators, we must ask ourselves: Are we prioritizing the right things in our product roadmaps? At Frantic Castle, we've been reflecting on three key trends shaping the future of mobile gaming: 1. Player Personalization at Scale: Gamers no longer want a one-size-fits-all experience. Leveraging AI to dynamically adapt game content based on individual behavior is no longer a nice-to-have - it's table stakes. The challenge? Doing this WITHOUT breaking immersion or trust. 2. Sustainability in Game Design: From energy-efficient code to reducing server loads, creating sustainable systems isn't just good for the planet - it's good for business. Players increasingly care about the impact of the products they use, and they'll gravitate toward companies who get it right. 3. Social Layers Driving Engagement: We've all seen the meteoric rise of co-op and competitive play, but the next frontier is making casual games FEEL just as social. Community-driven features like asynchronous challenges or shared progress paths are opportunities to enhance connection without losing accessibility. We'd love to hear from others in the space: - What strategies are you exploring to innovate responsibly? - Which emerging trends are you investing in? The future of mobile gaming is being written in real time, and collaboration is how we'll ensure we build games that aren't just PLAYED - but remembered. #MobileGaming #GameDevelopment #Innovation #ThoughtLeadership

#snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking #gamedeveloping Hello connections this an article about the dynamics of game development which can take small teams to million dollar projects. Title: Understanding the Dynamics of Game Development The landscape of game development has undergone significant transformation, largely propelled by the rise of the mobile game market. What was once a domain dominated by large studios has now become accessible to smaller teams, paving the way for innovative ideas to flourish. One notable aspect of modern game development is the staggering budget required. An average multiplatform game commands a development budget ranging from $18-28 million, with high-profile titles often surpassing the $40 million mark. This financial investment underscores the complexity and scale of contemporary game projects. In stark contrast to the early 1980s, where a single programmer could single-handedly develop a game, today's games demand the collaboration of large teams, sometimes consisting of over a hundred individuals. This shift reflects the heightened user expectations and technical requirements of modern commercial games. At the heart of game development lies the inception of an idea or concept, often drawing inspiration from existing game concepts. Whether it's a single individual working tirelessly or a multinational company with vast resources, game developers embark on a journey from concept to completion, navigating through various challenges along the way. Console manufacturers play a pivotal role in shaping the gaming landscape, with stringent technical and concept approval requirements for games seeking publication on their platforms. This regulatory framework ensures a certain level of quality and consistency across the gaming ecosystem. While most modern PC or console games typically take three to five years to complete, the advent of the mobile game market has shortened development cycles significantly, with some titles being developed in a matter of months. However, there are exceptions to this timeline, with certain games like Duke Nukem Forever and Spore enduring lengthy development periods spanning several years. Despite the immense revenue generated by the gaming industry, the distribution of profits among stakeholders can be contentious. Many developers find themselves grappling with minimal profits, prompting them to explore alternative economic models through internet marketing and distribution channels. In conclusion, the evolution of game development from its humble beginnings to its current state highlights the dynamic nature of the industry. As technology continues to advance and consumer preferences evolve, developers must adapt and innovate to thrive in this ever-changing landscape.

👋🏻 Hello Fellow Living Beings, I wanted to share some learnings from what we've been working on at Arth House this April - No code toolset we use to run pre-production - A broad game format that can last, almost forever...Session Based Games For context, we're prototyping a virtual play and hangout space focused on creating social impact (health, applied education, finance), leveraging the mutually beneficial networks we build. We are using a no code toolset that lets us test and work, cross platform - Unreal Engine Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), HypeHype Inc. and looking into Roblox soon. We're #utilisingAI to improve speed and overall quality of concept presentations, idea generation, building custom soundscapes and admin/PR communication. Maybe Nihal and I can put together a video breakdown of the game elements we looked at and how we reinterpreted it keeping in mind #gamedesignthinking and limitations of using only #UEFN's no code tools. Let me know if anyone is interested? I am excited about what the future holds for indie devs and the game industry in general. I understand it is going through a flux with the 'radical innovation' of AI. In Harvard Business Review's The Innovators Toolkit it says, this period of flux is normal, when buyers and sellers are unsure, until the new tech/system settles in place and innovation goes back to being incremental and less stressful. It is a process that has repeated itself. Remember the internet becoming publicly available and changing the way we live today? So "Session Based Games", (ref Mitch Lasky and Blake Robbins GameCraft ep Forever Games) and experiences, are an interesting concept The goal is to build an engaging single/multiplayer experience (proto) that can be played/experienced again and again in sessions. Last month we looked at collaborative co-op experiences and built a play space that quite a variety of people enjoyed. Next month we're consulting professionals and translating therapy frameworks to video games. This month, my teammate Nihal Kadam, and I have been working on Session Based Games. We looked at board games like chess and ludo, virtual hangout spaces like VR Chat, Discord and Roblox, also MOBAs, Deathmatches and Extraction Shooters - and specifically at Brawl Stars, Honor of Kings, League of Legends, VainGlory, Pokemon Unite, Hunt Showdown, Arena Breakout. In session based games the experience could feel fresh for different reasons: - Progression of a production ecosystem (sim/tycoon), skill level, abilities, narrative - Players bring something different each time based on the strategy and elements they use - The Player brings different desires, moods, recent experiences or interests to explore They often have similar factors like limited play spaces or time, and have depth balancing strategy and chance #hybridcasual, but they can vary.. ..And the rules can be bent effectively if you learn them. Even if only a few, just the ones you need.

At the end of 2023 I wrote that I wanted to do three things in 2024: 💪 Better Self-Care 🎮 Be part of a release or release at least one game 🧠 Get better at one new engine I went to the gym more. ✅ on the first one. I made a clone of the T-Rex Runner: https://lnkd.in/djqbxvAA. ✅ on the second one. I dove into Unreal Engine and Godot to better learn both so I'm gonna count that as two checks for me ✅ So overall a productive year despite all the issues in #games hiring. I also learned a lot about Unity DOTS and ECS as well as participated in the Unreal Fellowship for Games which lead to this entry: https://lnkd.in/dcYirNZ2 I also made some predictions about 2024: 1. The Indie Games industry will see a boom in new studios 📈 2. With headsets such as the #metaquest3 and the #pico the #virtualreality market will continue to grow at a steady pace. 👓 3. #denmark will start investing more into #videogames 🎮 1. Is hard to quantify. There aren't lists of new indie studios. However we can see there was an increase in new indie releases this year and in that sense that could be indicator that new studios are growing. This one is undecided. 2. The Virtual Reality market has grown *a lot* this year so at least that call was right! 3. This one is interesting because while the investment didn't necessarily grow, it didn't shrink either as Denmark now has enshrined in law that games are culture! With the NIMBI Gamelab now a reality and for the next couple of years we will hopefully see a boom in the Danish games industry. Exciting times! 2/3 ain't bad. I hope everyone today have a great time and will reach their goals in 2025!

Game Development: The Dream That Fades for Many, But It Doesn’t Have To Game development is one of the toughest creative journeys. So what is the state of the game industry? Game Developers Conference and Game Developer collaborated again on a survey involving responses from over 3000 developers. As a studio committed to inclusivity and accessibility, we at Simply Sweet Games were particularly struck by these findings: 🔹 Accessibility Gains Momentum Nearly half of developers (48%) are now implementing accessibility measures like closed captioning, colorblind modes, and adjustable difficulty levels—up from 38% last year. This aligns with our mission at SSG to make gaming truly welcoming for everyone and we hope to see this conversation around accessibility continuing to widen in depth and scope. 🔹 Indie Studios on the Rise 32% of respondents work at indie studios, and the majority of developers are at companies with 50 or fewer employees. Small teams like Simply Sweet Games are proving innovation and community impact don’t require massive resources. 🔹 Diversity Still Needs Work! The industry remains predominantly white and male, with women still making up just 23% of developers. Diverse teams allow us to create games reflecting a broad spectrum of experiences, ensuring all voices are heard and represented. The industry needs to do better at all levels. 🔹 Generative AI Sparks Debate AI tools are reshaping workflows, but ethical concerns are rising, with 84% of developers expressing some level of concern about negative impacts. One respondent noted: "AI exploits the work of others without credit or payment and is a net loss to true creativity.” I see this report as a call to action. The path forward isn’t just about making great games—it’s about building a better industry. Together, we can shape a future where gaming truly belongs to everyone.💜 #gamesindustry #gamedev #accessibilitymatters #inclusiveleadership #Innovation #wordsdmatter #stateoftheindustry #gaming #gamedevelopment #inclusion #diversity #womeningames #stateofgames

Let's talk about a trend that's been buzzing around the gaming industry lately: Reskinning games. While it might seem like a quick fix or an easy way to capitalize on existing success, it's crucial to understand the potential pitfalls associated with this approach. 🛑 Lack of Innovation: Reskinning often leads to stagnant creativity. Instead of pushing boundaries and exploring new ideas, developers may fall into the trap of recycling the same gameplay mechanics and visuals, resulting in a lacklustre experience for players. 📉 Diminished Reputation: Constantly churning out reskinned games can seriously tarnish a developer's reputation. Players are not only quick to recognize recycled content, but they're also vocal about their disappointment on social media platforms and review sites. This negative feedback can have severe and long-lasting consequences for a studio's brand. 💸 Financial Risks: While reskinning may offer short-term gains, it's a risky and unsustainable strategy in the long run. Players are becoming increasingly discerning, and they're more likely to invest their time and money in games that offer genuine innovation and value. Failing to deliver on expectations can result in significant and potentially devastating revenue losses. 🌟 Embrace Originality: Instead of relying on reskinning, let's embrace originality and creativity. Invest time and resources into developing unique gameplay experiences that captivate and engage players. Consider strategies like [brainstorming sessions], [cross-disciplinary collaboration], and [user feedback integration] to foster creativity and originality. By prioritizing innovation, we can push the boundaries of gaming and create experiences that resonate for years to come. 🚀 Let's elevate the gaming industry together by championing creativity and originality. Say no to reskinning and yes to innovation! 💡 #GamingIndustry #Innovation #Originality #GameDevelopment #CreativeGaming
