A man is in hospital after suffering multiple stab wounds when he was attacked in Liverpool.

Merseyside Police said the man, in his 30s, was found at 18:00 GMT on Tuesday at a house in Ruskin Street, Walton, with "slash wounds" to his leg, back and hand.

The force said 40 minutes earlier, a man was attacked by a "group of males" with either poles or bats in a nearby alleyway off Roxburgh Street and Delamore Street.

A 57-year-old man, from Walton, was arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of an offensive weapon and resisting arrest. Police are investigating if the incidents are connected.

The man who was stabbed is in a serious but stable condition in hospital, police said.

Det Ch Insp Ben Dyer said "we believe this was a targeted attack carried out by a number of males".

He added: "The injuries sustained by the victim are extensive and it will no doubt come as a huge shock to those living on Ruskin Street and the surrounding area."
