We asked our readers to send in their best pictures on the theme of "speed". Here is a selection of the photographs we received from around the world.

Bruce Carrington: "For such an enormous bird of prey, the speed and agility of the White-tailed Eagle is truly impressive. This raptor was photographed near Ulva, on the Isle of Mull."

Patrick Dixon: "This multiple exposure image was taken as the Blue Tit came in to land on a feeder. The shapes it adopts in order to slow down from high speed are virtually impossible to perceive with the naked eye."

Robert Hunter: "Ready, Steady, Go! Taken on Pendine Sands whilst working with Coast Classics."

Julian Crowe: "Carousel in motion on Clapham Common."

Alistair McGarva: "On holiday in Edinburgh I captured the early morning traffic on Princes Street. The bus lights give a great impression of speed when passing by."

Steve Demeranville: "This Mongolian Eagle Hunter, holding his eagle high, races into the wind, providing enough speed for her to open her wings and surf through the air."

Phil Couvrette: "It's always quite the sight when one actually sees the air around a jet fighter react to friction and drag as the plane twists while picking up speed."

Richard Martin: "Race to the top! Giving it their all at the local hill climb."

Gary Bradshaw: "Top Fuel Fury - evening drag racing at Dragstalgia."

Jude Bytheway: "A Red Kite in Scotland plummeting as it flew at speed."

Tara Lowry: "A rodeo competitor and her horse race against the clock in the barrel racing event in Alberta, Canada. The racer with the fastest clocked time wins."

Dave Hall: "The serious business of 4x4 racing."

Gary Richards: "The bright July sunshine was just right for capturing this Pitts S-2S Special as it sped past, smoke billowing in its wake."

Peter Foster: "Spooked by some unknown predator, this herd of Zebra stampede across the savannah in Botswana."

Piero Pruneri: "This is a sprint not a marathon!"
