Three bridges view

Cropped from Happy Valley Racecourse c. 1868.

The photo shows three bridges across the Wong Nai Chung Nullah/Bowrington Canal.

On the left is Bowrington Old Bridge [????-????] across the nullah. This is probably the oldest one of the three bridges and could have been constructed in the early 1840s already. It appears on the 1845 map on Gwulo. The road was called Queen’s Road these days (1843 map on New HK Maps). That was before the construction of the Happy Valley Racecourse.

The middle bridge (Leighton Hill Road Old Bridge [c.1864-????]) likely spanned across the nullah, the road that leads over it was named Leighton Hill Road (today only Leighton Road). The area was reclaimed in the 1860s and the Bowrington Canal was constructed and finished in 1864. This might also be the construction date of this bridge. The bridge can be seen on the 1866 map on Gwulo.

The bridge on the right is Ngo Geng Kiu / Goose Neck Bridge [????- ]

Likely all bridges have been demolished latest when the nullah and Bowrington Canal were covered.
