1On April 20, 2021, the military reported that Pres. Idriss Déby Itno had been killed in battle with rebels. The military dissolved the government and National Assembly and established the National Council of Transition, a military council, to govern the country for 18 months, with new elections planned thereafter. Déby’s son Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno was named interim president by the military council. On October 1, 2022, the transition period was extended for two more years, with a transitional civilian government of national unity planned to replace the transitional military council. Déby Itno was sworn in as transitional president on October 10. A presidential election, meant to herald the return to civilian rule, was held on May 6, 2024, of which Déby Itno was declared the winner; he was inaugurated on May 23. Legislative elections were due to be held in late 2024. |
