Bernie and Violet McGinnis and their son, Todd, are part of that great trek. Violet, with a university education, wants more for herself than the jobs available to women in their home town of Tignish, Prince Edward Island. Bernie, a fisherman since the age of thirteen, agrees to leave his traditional calling for work out west.
