Description
APPLICANT: MANCHESTER INDUSTRIES OF AUSTRALIA PTY. LIMITED
NUMBER:
FILING DATE: Form COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA The Patents Act 1990 PETTY PATENT SPECIFICATION FOR AN INVENTION ENTITLED: GLOW FABRIC The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: -1- FABRIC GLOW TREATMENT Technical Area This invention relates to the area of fabrics and textiles and in particular to a means of treating such fabrics and textiles such that a patterning upon the surface of the textile is able to glow in the dark.
Background to the Invention It is known for plastics materials to be impregnated with chemicals which enable them to absorb light when irradiated and to then re-emit visible radiation when the material is in the dark. Such technology has however been restricted to io applications such as the provision of stellar shapes for children which shapes can be affixed to ceilings and such like and can be used particularly in bedrooms.
There has, to date, however existed no technology for providing similar light absorption and re-emission properties in relation to fabrics and textiles.
Outline of the Invention It is an object of this invention to provide a fabric having glow in the dark properties and to provide a method of treating fabrics and textiles such that they The invention is a fabric which has been treated so that at least part of the surface of the fabric is enabled to glow in the dark following exposure to light ,the fabric treatment being the application of a chemical compound to the fabric which compound includes a resin containing a glow agent, the fabric then being stentherised and then compacted such that while the resulting chemical compound need not have any appreciable colour when exposed to light ,WP5\PSPEC MIAN-GLOW2.wpd 20/12/00 Ui however, when in the dark, it emits stored energy as light producing phosphorescent iridescence for a period of several or more minutes.
It is preferred that the chemical treatment composition be based on polyurethane resin and contain a pigment which is based on zinc sulphide and which is used as a special agent or binder, thickener and fixer of properties on the fabric.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood we shall describe by way of non limiting example one particular embodiment thereof.
The composition of the chemical treatment of the invention is that a ready printing paste is provided which is based on polyurethane resin containing io pigment based on zinc sulphide, containing a glow agent, which is used as a special agent or binder, thickener and fixer of the chemical properties onto the fabric.
The paste preferably includes 0.20g/Kg antifoam agent, 250g/Kg binder, pigment fixer, 26g/Kg thickening agent and 150-200g/Kg glow agent.
This chemical treatment is applied to the fabric which is then cured by stentherising and compaction, in other words by heating and stretching. This stentherising and compaction is carried out at a rate such that the chemical treatment adheres to the fabric and is able to be washed and otherwise used in a normal fashion without being removed from the fabric. The preferred curing time is for 5 minutes at 1500C with salt additives which assist in the longevity of the glow life.
It is to be understood however that the washing process would ultimately deactivate the chemical treatment.
~I51\SPEC AN-GLOW2.wpd 20/12/00 1- I C)i
CZ<
In order to provide the glow in the dark properties to fabric, the paste is applied to the surface of the fabric in a desired pattern however, it does not of itself necessarily have any particular colour when exposed to light and is in general a yellow-greenish colour. However, during such exposure, the pigment absorbs s the energy that is incident upon it and subsequently, if placed in the dark can emit stored energy as light producing phosphorescent iridescence for some period of time which is a least of the order of minutes and can be as much as thirty minutes.
The duration of the time during which light is emitted by the fabric will of course io be dependent on the relative newness of the application of the chemical treatment to the fabric. In addition the treated fabric is sufficiently cured by the stentherising and compaction process as to be chemically stable and as such does not constitute any danger to the user and ultimately to the environment.
It is envisaged that the fabric treated in accordance with the invention can be used to manufacture visually attractive bed linen and curtains and the like. It is further envisaged that any fabrics or textiles so treated can be used in the manufacture of clothing and made into any other articles which are manufactured from textiles.
Whilst we have described herein one specific embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that variations and modifications in this can be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.

Claims (4)
1. Fabric which has been treated so that at least part of the surface of the fabric is enabled to glow in the dark following exposure to light, the treatment being by the application to the fabric of a chemical compound which includes polurethane resin and contains a pigment having a glow agent the fabric being then stentherised and then compacted such that while the resulting chemical compound need not have any appreciable colour when exposed to light however, when in the dark, it emits stored energy as light producing phosphorescent iridescence for a period of several or more minutes.
2. The fabric of claim 1 wherein the treatment includes the application of a paste which is based on polyurethane resin containing a pigment based on zinc sulphide, said pigment having a glow agent, which is used as a special agent or binder, thickener and fixer of the chemical properties onto the fabric which is then cured by stentherising and compaction.
3. The fabric of claim 2 wherein the paste includes 0.20g/Kg antifoam agent, 250g/Kg binder, 10-15g/Kg pigment fixer, 26g/Kg thickening agent and
150-200g/Kg glow agent and the curing time is for 5 minutes at 150oC with salt additives which assist in the longevity of the glow life. DATED this 21st day of December, 2000 MANCHESTER INDUSTRIES OF AUSTRALIA PTY. LIMITED Its Patent Attorneys A TATLOCK ASSOCIATES
