A base for a varnish compsn. comprises (a) synthetic or cellulosic extender based on toluene or its derivs, benzene and/or acetone, (b) a polystyrene and (c) white spirit. The compsn is used as such or modified with colourants and fillers to give varnishes which are resistant to acids, heat, shock and chemicals.
