The preferred use of this composition is as a skin whitening composition. As used herein, the term "ascorbic acid compound" means ascorbic acid or its derivatives having the formula (II), where R ^ 2 ^ and R ^ 3 ^ are independently selected from hydrogen and linear or branched alkyl with 1 to about 8 carbon atoms; M ^ 1 ^ is a metal; and x is an integer between 1 and about 3. More preferably, R ^ 2 ^ and R ^ 3 ^ are independently selected from hydrogen and linear or branched alkyl having 1 to about 3 carbon atoms; M ^ 1 ^ is sodium, potassium, magnesium, or calcium.
