Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A disposable product, such as a diaper, sanitary pad, or underpad, comprises a backing sheet, an absorbent pad overlying the backing sheet and a top sheet overlying the pad. The top sheet is of a non-woven hydrophobic material, such as polypropylene or polyethylene fibers, and the top sheet is held in contact with the pad at locations spaced from the periphery of the pad. This may be accomplished by point or line embossing, by adhesives, heat sealing, or any other suitable form of bonding.

Description
33C~
t/ ~:D O~ ~ ~ INVENTION
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a disposable product, such as a diaper, sanitary pad, or underpad, and ~oTe particularly to a disposable product with fluid penetrating top sheet.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR_ART
Presently, most disposable products, such as a diaper, use a top cover or top sheet made of 100% rayon. A top sheet made with rayon fibers has certain difficulties in that the rayon fibers hold a significant amount of fluid while permitting for high wetback, which serves to keep the infant's skin wet. In order to overcome the difficulties of diapers with rayon fibers7 a top sheet of a hydrophobic material, such as polyethylene or polypropylene fibers, has been proposed7 such as shown in United States Patent No. 3,8387692. The hydrophobic top sheets provide for lower fluid wetback, but have the disadvantage of a slow rate of fluid penetration. To overcome this difficulty, various pro-` posals have been made, including providing holes or apertures or slits in the hydrophobic top sheet. Of course, these holes immediately permit for high fluid wetback, thereby reducing the advantage of the hydrophobic material as a top sheet.
:
::
':
:
The presen-t invention overcomes these difficulties and has for its primary object provision for rapid fluid penetration while there is low fluid retention and no fluid wetback.
According to the present invention, there is provided a disposable diaper for absorbing fluids comprising, in order, a backing sheet, an absorbent pad overlying said backing sheet, and a top sheet overlying said pad, means holding said diaper in assembled relationship, said top sheet being of a non-woven hydrophobic material, and spaced adhesive means in the crotch area of fluid contact bonding said top sheet to said absorbent pad to form spaced ribs and spaced wells for receiving the fluid.
The hydrophobic material can be polyethylene or polypropylene fibers which are bonded to an absorbent pad by means of bonding or line embossing, by adhesives, heat sealing, or any other bonding means. Point or line embossing allows the fluid to get in touch with the absorbent pad for immediate penetration. If the hydrophobic sheet is not in contact with the absorbent pad, the fluid will stay on the top sheet a much longer time.
Further features will become apparent as the following description of this invention proceeds, preferred embodiments being shown in the accompanying drawing, by way of example only, wherein:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts ~hrough-out the various views, reference numeral 10 is used to gcnerally designate an absorbent pad constructed in accordance with the concepts of the present invention. The invention may be used in the formation and manufacture of sanitary pads, underpads, and other similar disposable products, as well as diapers. The diaper 10 is provided with an impervious backing sheet 12 on which an absorbent pad 1~ is positioned. or otherwise secured to the top sheet to hold the diaper in assembled condition. As can be seen best in Figure 2, the top sheet and absorbent pad are embossed along lines of contact 20 so as to be bonded to each other whereby spaced lines of contact spaced from the periphery of the diaper are provided. These lines of contact serve two purposes. First, they provide means for gathering fluid in the wells between the raised ribs 22 and secondly, the lines of contact pass fluid rapidly to the absorbent pad. In lieu of the lines of contact 20, points of contact ~ay be provided by embossing or heat sealing. In lieu of the embossed lines of contact 20, lines of adhesive, as at 26, may be coated on the pad 1~, and in lieu of the linee of adhesive, spaced points of adhesive arranged -in rows, as indicated at 28, can be utilized.
Various departures from the above descrihed disposable product may be made within the scope of the invention.
