Abstract

The tool is of the type in which flexible grinding elements, generally in the form of emery discs, under the effect of the centrifugal force during the rotation of the tool, are distended radially outwards in order to brush over and machine the surface that is to be treated. The tool according to the invention is constructed on the basis of a tool body 1 of cylindrical drum shape. This tool body is provided on the outside with one or more helical grooves 2, which face with the open side outwards. The groove or grooves may run in parallel or intersecting directions. The grooves serve to accommodate and fix the grinding elements, particularly in combination with brushes 5, which serve to support the discs. The grinding elements may be permanently or replaceably fitted in the grooves. The combination of the helical grooves and the reinforcing brushes gives the tool greatly improved grinding characteristics, among other things with regard to surface finish and uniform polishing of surfaces with sharp projections and depressions. The service life of the tool is increased compared to that of hitherto known tools of equivalent type. <IMAGE>
