Abstract

Digital computer audiometer applying "noise shaping" techniques in signal generation. It consists of an audiometer developed on a personal computer. A computer application, control and measurement interface, generates the necessary test signals to evaluate the acoustic response of a patient's ear. The precision and quality required in the audiometers is obtained by new procedures. First, the generation of the signals is carried out by digital algorithms. The distortion and dynamic range thereof are optimized to the values required by "noise shaping techniques" that allow the quantification noise (digital coding) to be canceled just at the frequency of the generated tone. Secondly, the transmission of the signals that are applied to the patient is done in digital format (without sound card), specifically by one of the USB ports (Universal Serial Bus) of any personal computer. This ensures that the test signals are free of unwanted noise generated in the computer itself: crosstalk and electrical noise. Finally, headphones compatible with the USB protocol are used to decode the signals produced by the application. Likewise, a button connected to the computer through the RS-232 serial port allows the patient to be sent the response of which auditory characteristics are being evaluated. The audiometer thus designed is a precise, robust and low-cost system as no other "hardware" element is necessary to meet the required specifications, for this type of equipment, by the standards that apply to it.
