Abstract
A gasification reaction vessel (gasifier) (10) has an upper section (20) and lower section (18) with a grid (14) for retaining a bed (16) of fluidizable and heat-retaining particulate material. The upper section has an enlarged average internal cross-sectional area compared to that of lower section, so as to facilitate disengagement and removal of synthetic gas from bed of particulate material. A gasifier (10) has an upper section (20) and lower section (18) with a grid (14) for retaining a bed (16) of fluidizable and heat-retaining particulate material. The heat-retaining particulate material is sand, preferably silica sand or alumina sand of average diameter 200-700 micron. The bed is fluidized by a stream of oxygen-containing gas fed through the grid. The lower section receives a feed of carbonaceous material to be gasified. The upper section has an enlarged average internal cross-sectional area compared to that of lower section, so as to facilitate disengagement and removal of synthetic gas from bed of particulate material, thus enabling recovery and evacuation of synthetic gas produced in the lower section. An Independent claim is also included for the gasification of carbonaceous material feedstock. Oxygen-enriched air (fluidization gas) containing 25-50% oxygen, is provided to the gasification bed, by a grid bearing tuyeres and carbonaceous material is fed by feed port.
