Abstract

A method of burning liquid hydrocarbon fuel to produce a stable, low-nitric oxide, low particulate emission level blue flame, comprising the operations of (a) spraying fine droplets of liquid fuel into a region fuel injection direction to a combustion chamber downstream of said fuel injection region, (b) pressurizing air to provide a source of combustion air, (c) dividing pressurized combustion air into a secondary proportion and a main proportion, (d) feeding the secondary proportion of the combustion air to the fuel injection region next to said fuel spray, (e) inflaming the fuel spray to produce combustion, (f). feeding the main portion of the combustion air through a plurality of spaced orifices that provide multiple air jets directed to a stale air and chemical alteration zone located upstream of said fuel injection region, said jets being directed air through said zone towards said fuel injection region, (g) distributing said multiple jets of air to create a region of reduced pressure near said multiple orifices relative to the pressure inside said combustion chamber, being located said region of reduced pressure at the entrance to the air stale and chemical alteration zone, (h): passing a part of the gaseous products of combustion that are generated in said combustion chamber through a recirculation path that extends in heat exchange relationship with a heat exchanger that is fluid cooled to cool the recirculating gaseous products preferably to a temperature below 426.5 ° C, (i) introducing the cooled recirculating gaseous products in said reduced pressure region, (j) mixing said chilled recirculating gaseous products with said multiple jets of air in said stale air and chemical alteration zone as the main proportion of the combustion air passes through said zone, and (k) introducing the stale air into said fuel injection region to mix the stained and chemically altered air with said fuel spray and with the secondary proportion of combustion air in said region for the preparation and mixing of fuel spray with stale air, whereby the prepared mixture of fuel spray and stale air passes from said region to said chamber of combustion to burn in it with a stable blue flame that provides a level low nitric oxide and low particle content emissions.
