Abstract

Polycarbonate membranes, esp. for haemodialysis, are made by (1) casting onto a smooth substrate surface a layer of a soln. contg. a polyether-polycarbonate block copolymer (I) contg. 5-35 wt. % polyether component, a water miscible org. solvent (II) and an assistant solvent (III) which acts as a swelling agent for the (I), (2) partially evaporating the solvent (3) immersing the partially dried film in water to form a gelled membrane and (4) stripping the gelled me-membrane from the substrate surface. Compared with the normal cellulosic dialysis membranes the polycarbonate membranes are more effective in removing medium mol. wt. impurities (mol. wt. 500-3000), have higher bursting strength, and more rigid in the wet state can be fabricated by welding and give more rapid dialysis than Cuprophan (RTM) membranes.
