Abstract

Fuel-cell electrode consists of (I) an active layer, (II) a hydrophobic layer, (III) a porous layer and (IV) a carbon fabric enclosed in layer (I). Layer (Ie ensures reaction at its level of one of the reactants in the presence of the electrolyte. Layer (II) is immediately underneath layer (I), and has predetermined hydrophobicity and porosity so as to permit the reactant to reach layer (I) while avoiding passage of the electrolyte. It also has sufficient electronic conductivity to lead away the electrons resulting from the reaction. Layer (III) is beneath the hydrophobic layer and has sufficient conductivity to remove the electrons. The surface of this layer not in contact with the hydrophobic layer is fed with reactants. The electrode is thin, light, and exhibits improved electrical characteristics.
