Abstract
1,041,852. Cylinders. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. March 14, 1963 [March 16, 1962], No. 10131/63. Heading F1B. In a method of producing a turbo-charged opposed piston engine having outer cylinder sections 1, 3, containing the exhaust and inlet ports 4, 6, and a central section 2 containing the fuel injector, the cylinder sections are initially made of such a length that the axial distance between the ports 4, 6 is such as to provide the correct port timing for, say, a three cylinder engine and the cylinder sections are then modified in length to provide an axial distance between the ports 4, 6, which is correct for the engine being made. The cylinder length is modified either by machining the central section 2 to a smaller length or by machining one or both of the inner ends of sections 1, 3; for example the section 2 of a cylinder, Fig. 1, suitable for a three cylinder engine is machined to a smaller length 2<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2 (not shown), suitable for a two cylinder engine or an engine as shown in Fig. 2A (not shown) in which pairs of cylinders 15 are connected to separate turbine sections and a single cylinder 17 is connected to a further turbine section.
