Abstract
Fluorocarbon polymer-coated ferrous metal substrates e.g polytetrafluoroethylene-coated razor blades, are produced by contacting the metal substrate with an aqueous dispersion of the fluorocarbon polymer, the dispersion containing from 0.5 to 5% by weight of the polymer and a water-soluble electrolyte capable of acting as a corrosion promotor with respect to the metal substrate, the concentration of the electrolyte and the pH of the dispersion being such that the electrolyte acts as a corrosion promoter. The dispersion may contain from 1 to 3% by weight of the fluorocarbon polymer. The following electrolytes may be used: hydrogen peroxide, 0.5 x 10-4 to 10-2 mole/litre, pH 1.5 to 3.5; potassium dichromate, 1 x 10-4 to 0.5 x 10-2 mole/litre, pH 1.5 to 3.0; potassium persulphate, 0.5 x 10-4 to 0.2 x 10-2 mole/litre, pH 1.5 to 3.3; ferric chloride, 0.5 x 10-4 to 0.5 x 10-2 mole/litre, pH 1.5 to 3.0; or chromic chloride, 0.2 x 10-4 to 0.3 x 10-3 mole/litre, pH 1.5 to 3.3; ferric nitrate, 1.5 x 10-4 to 1.15 x 10-2 mole/litre, pH 1.5 to 3.5. The metal substrate may be of stainless steel. Cutting edges of stainless steel razor blades may be immersed in or sprayed with the dispersion. After deposition of the fluorocarbon polymer on the substrate, the coating may be dried and sintered. The polymer may be polytetrafluoroethylene and the sintering is effected by heating at 350 DEG C. for at least 15 minutes preferably in a non-oxidizing atmosphere or under a high vacuum. The polymer may be the copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene.
