Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general Formula I <FORM:1047135/C2/1> and salts thereof, wherein X and Y are selected from oxygen and -NH-; R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7 and R8 are selected from hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; A is selected from C1 to C8 alkyl which may be substituted by halogen, aryl, aralkyl, aminoaryl, substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic aminoalkyl; A1 is selected from hydrogen, C1 to C8 alkyl which may be substituted by halogen, aralkyl, dialkylaminoalkyl or substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic aminoalkyl or substituted aminoalkoxyalkyl of the formula B2N(CH2)mO(CH2)n, where B is a C1 to C4 alkyl or B2N is a heterocyclic radical and m and n are integers in the range 1 to 4. The salts of the compounds of Formula I are the mineral and organic acid addition salts and the mono- and di-quaternary salts. Compounds of Formula I are prepared from the corresponding 1-hydroxycyclopentanecarboxylic acids or 1-amino-cyclopentane carboxylic acids by esterification of the hydroxy group esterification of the carboxylic group, conversion, of the acid group to an amide group and/or acylation of the amino group, whichever reaction, or reactions, are relevant to obtain the desired product. Intermediates isolated in the processes of the examples are 1-(n-pentoxycarbonyl)cyclopentanol (Example 1); ethyl 1-(p - nitrobenzoylamino) cyclopentane carboxylate (Example 4); and 1-(31-bromopropoxycarbonyl) cyclopentanol (Example 5). The invention further comprises pharmaceutical compositions which contain a compound of Formula I or a salt thereof and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The carrier may be liquid or solid and the compositions may be in the form of tablets, injections, creams, lotions or pastes.
