Abstract

In manufacturing a graft copolymer of synthetic diene rubber, a -methylstyrene, acrylonitrile and styrene, firstly a monomer mixture of acrylonitrile and styrene, or these and not more than 30% of a -methylstyrene is continuously added to a latex of synthetic diene rubber, and secondly, after this graft polymerization is substantially completed, a second stage monomer mixture, consisting of acrylonitrile and a -methyl styrene, or these and not more than 30% of styrene is continuously added for graft polymerization, the amount of the said first-stage monomer mixture being 1/9 to 6/9 of the weight of said second-stage monomer mixture. The amount of a -methyl styrene in the first stage monomer mixture is preferably 0 to 30%. Examples describe graft polymerization on latices of polybutadiene and a styrenebutadiene copolymer, using a free-radical initiator system.
