Abstract
Dimethyl ether alone or mixed with methanol is oxidized with air in the presence of tungsten oxide to yield formaldehyde. 1 to 3.4% of CH3OCH3 with 99 to 96.6% of air may be contacted with the catalyst at 350 DEG to 600 DEG C. at a space velocity of 1000 to 20,000. Gaesous by-products include carbon monoxide and dioxide.ALSO:Formaldehyde is made by oxidising dimethyl ether alone or if desired admixed with methanol in the presence of tungsten oxide-containing catalysts. Additionally the catalyst may contain 1 or more of B, Se, Mo, V, Bi, P in the form of a compound(s). The catalysts may be supported on carriers such as Al2O3, SiC, or pumice, Al2O3 supports having a surface area of about 1 m2/gm. are exemplified.
