Abstract

1,082,514. Guiding felts; wires &c. HINDLE SON & CO. Ltd. May 8, 1964 [May 16, 1963], No. 19587/63. Heading D2A. A guide roller for an endless, travelling web, e.g. a felt or wire of a paper-making machine, is mounted so that the ends of the roller may be displaced in the plane of travel of the web and displacement of one end in one direction is always accompanied by equal and opposite movement of the other end. A guide roller 1, used to guide a generally-vertically running web, is mounted by means of trunnions 2 in self-aligning bearings 3 each mounted in pivoted levers 4 one end of each of which is pivoted on the frame 5 and the other, free end being connected by a rod 7 .to bell crank levers 8a, 8b. The two arms 8b of the bell crank levers are connected by a rod 9 so that displacement of one end of the roller 1 causes equal and opposite displacement of the other end. A pneumatic cylinder 11 and piston 12 control the slewing of the roller. Photoelectric means may be used to sense the wandering of the edge of the web and to control the action of the cylinder 11 and piston 12. A spring which may be variably loaded by means of a screw 14 and handwheel 15 determines the normal setting of the roller and position of the felt thereon. Alternatively roller setting means of the type referred to in specification 899001 may be used. A pneumatic or hydraulic compensating linkage may be used to correlate the movement of the ends of the roller in place of the mechanical lever system illustrated e.g. as described in Specification 1,082,513.
