Abstract
1,091,513. Pistons. MIRRLEES NATIONAL Ltd. June 1, 1966 [June 11, 1965], No. 24685/65. Heading F2T. A piston for internal combustion engines comprises a body part 10 having an integral false crown 11 and a gudgeon pin housing connected to the crown by a hollow conical structure 13 and a separate crown 24 formed with cavities and mechanically secured, as by bolts (28, Fig. 1), to the crown 11, the cavities in the crown 24 being filled with a heat insulating material 27 such as magnesium oxide or zinc oxide and closed by a barrier plate 25 and means being provided to circulate engine lubricating oil as a coolant through the space in the structure 13 which is closed by a heat shield 14 spaced from the plate 25. The latter is interposed between the crowns 11 and 24 and is connected to an outer flange 24b on the crown 24 by a flexible U-section element 26. Lubricating oil is supplied to the interior of the structure 13 through passages in the connecting rod 17 and gudgeon pin 18 and ducts 14b and returns to the engine sump through apertures 15 and drain passages (16, Fig. 1).
