Abstract

In a method for the wet preservation and corrosion protection of a metal article (e.g. of ferrous or cuprous metal) in contact with an aqueous phase, the aqueous phase contains 0.1 to 3000 mg. NH2NH2 per litre of water and 0.1 to 50 mg. methylene blue per litre of water. It may also contain 0.01 to 10 mg. of a complex heavy metal cyanide (calculated as the heavy metal) per litre of water, e.g. an ammonium or alkali metal complex heavy metal cyanide. By heavy metal is meant Cu, Co, Ni, Ag and Fe. The method can be used for preserving steam producing plants, hot water plants, circulating coolers and heat exchangers from water containing oxygen and/or inorganic salts such as the chlorides, sulphates and/or nitrates of the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. In use, the colour of the solution serves to indicate whether or not excess NH2NH2 is present. The activating effect of methylene blue on the reaction between NH2NH2 and O2 is enhanced by light energy, heating and the catalytic effect of metal surfaces.
