Abstract

1,106,761. Blasting cartridges. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 15 Feb., 1965 [15 Feb., 1964], No. 6826/65. Heading F3A. Explosive cartridges for underwater seismic measurements having means to connect the cartridges together to form a column of any desired length each comprises a forward closure 5 which may be frusto-conical and a recessed base closure 6 of similar contour, so that the forward closure of one cartridge nests in the base closure of the preceding adjacent cartridge. Each cartridge is provided with two shackles 7 aligned parallel with the longitudinal axis 13 of the casing 4 and arranged to swivel about an axis perpendicular to the axis 13. When the column is towed behind a ship by a cable attached to a shackle at the forward end, a float being attached to the rear, it assumes a horizontal position. The cover 5 has a sleeve or depression 14 for receiving a fuze or igniter and a similar sleeve may be provided in the base. These sleeves are closed by plugs 15 of plastics material. Both cover 5 and base 6 have annular rims 11, 12, respectively, which co-operate with a connecting sleeve 18 to secure the cartridges together. Beadings 16 are provided on the casing 4 and these are received in grooves 17 in the sleeve 18. Alternatively the cartridges may be secured together by circumferential bands having hook-and-eye end connections drawn together by means of a lever. In addition or in place of these connections a steel strap may extend around the column in an axial direction, the strap being threaded through the shackles.
