Abstract

A process for preparing a crystalline particulate granular detergent composition comprises forming a precursor slurry containing from 20-70% by weight of an alkali metal trimetaphosphate, from 20-45% by weight of water and from 0-25% by weight of a foaming agent, adjusting the temperature to from 140-212 DEG F., adding a strong base (one giving a pH of at least 10.2 in a 1% by weight solution in distilled water at 25 DEG C.) to the slurry in an amount of from 1.5 to 3 mole equivalents of hydroxyl ion per mole of alkali metal trimetaphosphate thus forming a tripolyphosphate salt and hydrating the tripolyphosphate and vaporizing water in the final slurry to give a foamed mass comprising a detergent composition containing hydrated tripolyphosphate salts; which process further comprises adding and mixing homogeneously into said precursor slurry, substantially contemporaneously with the addition of said base a granular silicate compound which remains partially undissolved before and during the above hydrating-foaming stage said silicate compound being added in a weight ratio of silicate to alkali metal trimetaphosphate of from 0.02:1.0 to 2.5:1.0 and having an SiO2:Na2O molecular ratio of from 1:2 to 2:1 at the time of addition to the precursor slurry. Suitable foaming agents, if used, are surface active agents. Defoaming silicones may also be added to the precursor slurry before or simultaneously with the addition of the base and the silicate compound. The detergent slurries may also include the traditional additives usually desired in detergent compositions including builder salts.
