Abstract
1,122,479. Evaporators; flash type; desalination of water. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 30 June, 1967 [2 Sept., 1966], No. 30322/67. Heading BIB. In an evaporator comprising a series of flash chambers 1, 2, 3, each of which communicates with a condensing chamber containing heat-exchange tubes, progressively lower pressures are maintained in the successive chambers and air and other non-condensible gases are removed from the evaporator by means of a vapour-operated ejector 61, the outlet of which is connected to the suction inlet of a liquid-operated ejector 62. As shown, the evaporator is used for the desalination of sea, river or lake water; the ejector 61 is operated by steam, and ejector 62 is operated by water. A stream of water is forced by pump 75 into the inlet of ejector 62, and draws in the mixture of steam and gases exhausted from ejector 61. The steam is condensed in the raw water, and a mixture of the hot water and gases flows into apparatus 87, where sulphuric acid is added in order to decompose carbonates. The mixture then flows into container 76 where the liberated gases are discharged through vent 84. The de-aerated water is pumped via line 88 through the heat-exchange tubes in stages 2 and 1 of the evaporator, and then through heater 49 into the first flash chamber 1. As the water flows through the chambers, part of it flashes into steam which is condensed on the heat-exchange tubes. A stream of the raw water is pumped through the heat-exchange tubes of stage 3 of the evaporator, and is then returned to source. A portion of the brine in flash chamber 3 is discharged through line 55, and the remainder is recirculated, together with makeup water from line 88. Distilled water is withdrawn through line 59. The water-level in container 76 may be automatically maintained at a predetermined level by a level-sensing device connected to a valve in line 88. Chambers 1, 2, 3 may be formed by a metal housing structure. Pump 75 and container 76 may be made of plastic material. The apparatus may be used to distil a solvent, other than water, from a solvent; in which case ejector 62 is operated by the solution, and ejector 61 is operated by the vapour of the solvent.
