[Also in Divisions B2 and B5] In absorbent articles for hygienic, therapeutic or physiotherapeutic use comprising at least two layers, a layer of a hydrophobic but permeable non-woven sheet is united to a layer of spongy material of open cellular structure. The layers may be united by spot welding or by stitching; alternatively, the spongy material may be formed in situ by depositing a layer of a foam-forming composition on the non- woven sheet and thereafter forming a foam from the composition. The non-woven sheet may comprise fibres of superpolyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polyesters, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, or mixtures or copolymers thereof; or fibres of natural origin which have been treated to render them hydrophobic; the non-woven sheet, which may be formed either of continuous filaments or of staple fibre yarns, may consist either of one material or of an intimate blend of differing materials. The material of open cellular structure may be artificial or synthetic spongy material based on regenerated cellulose, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, optionally reinforced with hydrophilic or non-hydrophilic fibres; the spongy material preferably is hydrophilic in chemical nature. The articles, which may be impregnated with a germicide and/or sterilised, may serve for the preparation of sanitary towels and tampons, surgical pads and incontinence pads.
