Abstract

1,137,819. Lubricants. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 6 Nov., 1967, No. 50317/67. Heading C5F. A lubricant comprises a hydrocarbon lubricating oil, 1-6 wt. per cent of oil-soluble basic salts of aromatic carboxylic acids and a Group II polyvalent metal having an atomic number of 12-56, and oil-soluble basic salts of naphthenic acids and the above metals in an amount which gives a T.B.N-E. value per 1% in the lubricating oil of 1À5-3À0 mg. KOH/g., the basic salts as a whole being present in amounts which give an overall T.B.N-E. value of 5-12. The aromatic acids may be C 3 -C 22 alkyl benzoic, C 3 -C 22 Mkyl naphthoic or C 8 -C 22 alkyl salicylic acids, e.g. lauryl or stearyl salicylic acids. The composition may also contain a metal thiophosphate, e.g. a zinc dialkyldithio. phosphate where the alkyl groups are amyl and/ or butyl. The base oil may be mineral and/or synthetic, e.g. polyisobutylene.
