The knitting instruments of a weft machine are remotely operated by elements which have their movements magnified whereby, comparatively, the movements of the elements result in a larger movement of the instruments. The connection between the elements and instruments may be mechanical, electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic. As shown in Fig. 1, the movement of a butt 32 on a lever 29 is transmitted to a needle 28 and by suitably positioning the pivot point 30 the needle can be caused to move an increased distance compared with that of the butt 32 operated by cam 33. Alternatively, an hydraulic piston and cylinder arrangement can be utilized to multiply the movement of the needle compared with the actuated element. In a further hydraulic arrangement, Fig. 4, fluid under pressure is caused to flow above or below a piston 37 operating a needle and the flow is controlled by valves operated by cams 44, 45 to transmit the cam movement to the needles but in a magnified form so that for a small cam movement the needles effect comparatively greater movement.
