Abstract
1,170,868. Drink mix. GENERAL MILLS Inc. 5 March, 1968 [24 May, 1967], No. 10703/68. Heading A2B. A drink mix adapted for combination with an appropriate potable liquid to form a beverage of the milk shake type, comprises flavoured bodies of puffed sugar containing a thickening agent and also when necessary a chelating agent. The flavoured bodies typically are of substantially spherical form, having a bulk density of from 200 to 400 cu. in. per Ib. and contain the puffed sugar in at least a partially crystalline state. Sugar: sucrose, maltose, lactose, laevulose, dextrose or corn syrup, preferably a mixture containing 75-95 per cent by weight sucrose and 5-25 per cent by weight corn syrup. Flavour: natural or artificial fruit (strawberry), mint, root beer, vanilla or cocoa flavouring. Thickening agent: methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, vegetable gums such as guar, tragacanth and locust bean gums, gelatin, alginates, pectins (both standard and methoxy, dextrins, pregelatinized starch and citric acid. The alginates, in particular, require a chelating agent e.g. tetrasodium pyrophosphate. The beverage may be prepared by substantially filling a container with the spheres and adding milk. According to an example, sucrose, corn syrup and water were mixed together to form a syrup, the syrup was heated to about 300‹F. at which point water was present at a level of about 3 per cent by weight, and the syrup was then poured on to a cooling slab until the temperature dropped to between 125‹F. and 150‹F. The resulting amorphous mass was coated with citric acid, root beer flavour and permitted colouring agent and the coated mass was kneaded and formed into spheres of about 5mm. in diameter. The spheres were puffed by subjecting them to a temperature of 160‹F. for 1 hour under a vacuum of 2mm. Hg. abs. When the puffed product was placed in milk a beverage resembling a root beer milk shake was produced. The strawberry or vanilla flavoured bodies pre pared according to the procedure of further examples were placed in milk to give strawberry and vanilla milk shakes, respectively.
