Abstract

1,176,045. Rotary shaft seals. CRANE PACKING Ltd. 13 Nov., 1968 [14 Nov., 1967], No. 51650/67. Heading F2B. A rotary face seal comprises an axiallymovable sealing ring 2 which is both urged into facial rubbing sealing contact with an axially fixed sealing ring (not shown) and sealed to its associated part, e.g. a pump housing 1, by an inflatable tube 3 located radially between the sealing ring 2 and the housing 1. The tube 3, which may be of rubber or neoprene, is of U-section and has feet 4 clamped to the housing 1 by a metal spacer ring 5 and a clamping ring 6. Ridges 8 on the tube engage corresponding recesses in the ring 2. The tube is inflated by pressure fluid supplied through a passage 9 in the housing and a hole 10 in the ring 5. The rings 2, 5 and 6 may be of the split type to facilitate their removal from the pump shafts (not shown). The tube 3 is preferably made from a length of extruded section.
