Abstract
1,176,059. Laminated carpet backing. HERCULES Inc. 24 Oct., 1967 [24 Oct., 1966; 18 Sept., 1967], No. 48365/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] A tufted carpet has as its primary backing material a film-reinforced non-woven fabric which comprises a synthetic thermoplastic film into which a fibrous staple web has been calendered. The backing may be produced by placing a layer or layers of staple fibres in contact with one or both faces of a thermoplastic film, softening the film, and embedding the fibres into the film by calendering. The fibres may be laid randomly on the film or may be carded to orient the individual fibres; the fibres in this case being arranged so that fibres of adjacent fibre layers are cross-laid. The fibres may be polypropylene, polyethylene, rayon, nylon, polyester, or acrylic fibres or combinations thereof, and the films may be polyethylene, polypropylene, or an ethylene/propylene block copolymer. The fibres may be calendered into the film using a heated roll. In making the carpet, polypropylene yarns are tufted into the backing, and the tufted material is back-scoured in boiling water, and tenter dried, latex is applied to the back thereof to adhere the tufts to the backing, and the carpet is tenter cured.
