Abstract

1,180,184. Catheter placement device. BRUNSWICK CORP. 19 March, 1968 [24 May, 1967], No. 13322/68. Heading A5R. A catheter placement device comprises a cannula 12, a stylet or needle 10 seated in said cannula with its piercing point extending forwardly of the cannula 12, a catheter 16 for inserting through said cannula when the needle is removed therefrom and a ferrule 18 slidably carried on the catheter 16 for locking the catheter relative to the cannula. As shown, a flexible plastics cannula 12 has a tapered distal end portion 34 and a flared proximal end portion 38. A polyvinyl ferrule 18 has a tapered body portion 54 extending from a wide-mouthed proximal end 56 to a narrowmouthed distal end 58, the size of which approximates to the diameter 45 of the catheter 16. To lock the device, the ferrule 18 is moved along the catheter until the distal end portion 58 wedges between the inner slope 40 of the cannula (Fig. 6) and the outer surface 45 of the catheter 16. To release the lock, the ferrule is twisted and moved towards the proximal end of the catheter, whereupon the catheter can be moved in or out relative to the cannula. The catheter may have an X-ray-opaque line extending from the distal end throughout a part of its length or may be made of X-rayopaque material. Catheters of various diameters and types may be used in the device. In use, the needle and cannula is inserted in the vein of a patient (Fig. 2), the needle is withdrawn, a catheter is inserted to the appropriate location in the vein and the ferrule is slid forward on the catheter to lock the catheter in the desired position.
