1,182,606. Centrifugal and circumferential-flow pumps. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. May 1, 1967 [April 12, 1966], No.15803/66. Heading F1C. In a pump for a liquid, e.g. gas turbine engine fuel, which may contain dirt or grit, and comprising a rotor 18 having peripheral blades 19 and operating within a chamber 12, aportion of the liquid discharged through an outlet 32 is supplied via a filter 33 and a passage 35, 31, 29, 28 to flow from annular channels 26, 27 in the side faces of the rotor to prevent ingress of dirt or grit from the chamber 12 between the side faces and the adjacent walls 14, 20. The filtered liquid also lubricates the bearings 36. The rotor 18 is of circumferential flow type, co-operating with side channels 21 bounded by an annular piston 23 which can be adjusted axially to vary the pump output. The circumferential flow stage is preceded by a centrifugal stage comprising an impeller 17.
