[Also in Division D1] A detergent &c. dispenser for programme-controlled washing machines comprises a housing with at least one cavity and a cover 9 for the or at least one cavity movable rotatably and axially and biased to open position by springs 13 but held in closed position by an electromagnetically controlled latch. The dispenser comprises a moulding enclosing an electromagnet 1, 2, whose core 5 is integral with a non-magnetic rod 6 carrying a square or polygonal 8 and 7 which is biased by a spring 8 and slides in a similarly shaped space in a moulded cover 9. A pin 11 on the lower end of rod 6 engages a slot in the main moulding to hold the cover closed when the door of a washing machine is opened so that the device is horizontal, detergent is placed in tank 4 and cover 9 is closed by rotation, until the springs 13 are tensioned and pin 11 engages slot 12. An electric impulse to the electromagnet releases pin 11 from slot 12 and hence cover 9 rotates to release detergent into the machine. In a front opening dish-washer the dispenser is secured liquid tight in an opening in the inner wall 22 of the door by its edge 18. It comprises a moulded synthetic resin or metal cup-shaped housing 51 with a semi-circular cover 52 and the same number of cavities surrounding a core 53 as there are wash cycles, e.g. two as shown. Cover 52 engages bearing surfaces 31 on core 56 and 32 on the lip 18. The ends of the coil 57 of solenoid 20 are enclosed by the legs 24 of a U-shaped ferromagnetic pole member 58, and the whole is moulded into the base of core 56. Within coil 57 is a movable armature 59 and passing through its centre shaft 60, whose upper end is moulded into a cap 61, with a square head 37 and whose lower end 34 is enlarged and passes through bushing 26. Head 37 is biased upwardly by spring 63 into a square hole in cover 52. Core 56 and cap 61 are connected by a torsion spring 64. A pin 66 secured to the end 34 of shaft 60 engages a shoulder 46 on the housing when the cover is over the second cavity 55. In operation, the cover is rotated until it overlies the filled cavity 55 with pin 66 engaging shoulder 46 and biased by spring 63 and then cavity 54 is filled. When door 30 is closed detergent in cavity 54 is dispensed and, on completion of the first cycle, coil 57 will be activated to release pin 60 from shoulder 46 when spring 64 will rotate the cover 52 clockwise and expose cavity 55 to deposit the second charge of detergent. In a modification, pin 66 engages a lip 41 until the solenoid is actuated when it is released and slides round to lip 42, Fig. 10.
