Abstract

1,191,872. Production of carbon blacksynthetic resin compositions. JAPAN GASCHEMICAL CO. Inc., and RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. OF JAPAN. 17 Aug., 1967 [18 Aug., 1966; 28 Feb., 1967], No. 38011/67. Heading C3P. A composition containing carbon black and a synthetic resin is prepared by contacting at least one α,#-ethylenically unsaturated monomer with a free radical polymerization initiator in the presence of carbon black, the initiator being added on at least two separate occasions, namely, prior to the initiation of polymerization and after the fluidity of the reaction mixture has increased. The polymerization may be carried out in an inert aqueous or non-aqueous liquid medium. In the examples, the following monomers are polymerized in the presence of carbon black (furnace or channel black) using azobisisobutyronitrile as the catalyst, which is added in at least 2 separate portions: (1) nbutyl acrylate in ethylene glycol monoethyl ether; (2) n-butyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid in ethylene glycol monomethyl ether; (3) styrene in toluene; (4) methyl methacrylate in bulk to form a prepolymer which is suspended in an aqueous medium for the completion of polymerization; (5) methyl methacrylate in bulk to form a prepolymer which is placed in a cell for completion of polymerization; (6) N,N- diethylaminoethyl methacrylate in methyl isobutyl ketone; (7) n-butyl acrylate, diethylaminoethyl methacrylate and acrylamide in methyl isobutyl ketone and butanol, the composition obtained being reacted with formaldehyde using maleic anhydride as catalyst; (9) nbutyl acrylate and acrylic acid in ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, the resulting composition being treated with ammonia, monoethanolamine or triethylamine; (12) N,N-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate in dimethyl formamide, the resulting composition being treated with acetic acid and (13) N,N-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile in N,N- dimethyl formamide, the resulting composition being treated with acetic acid or HCl or quaternized with methyl iodide.
