Abstract

1,193,846. Hypodermic syringes. PENICILLIN-GES. DAUELSBERG. 12 Oct., 1967 [21 Jan., 1967], No. 46520/67. Heading A5R. A hypodermic injection syringe includes a vial cylinder divided into front and rear chambers by a piston 17 which is shaped such that material can move from the rear to the front chamber but not in the reverse direction, moving the piston rearwardly causing material in the rear chamber to mix with that in the front chamber there being a stopper 21 surrounding the rear end portion of a rod supporting the piston and sealing the rear chamber of the vial cylinder, the stopper being able to move forward with the piston during the injection stroke. As shown the syringe vial 1 contains two medicaments 19, 20 (e.g. two liquids, or a powder and a solvent) separated by the piston 17 and returned in the vial by the stopper 21 and a pierceable plug 3. The medicament 19 is added to the syringe before the plug 3 is fitted and the medicament 20 is added through longitudinal and transverse bores 22, 23, 24 in the piston rod 16 using a separate filler tube 25, the bore 22 then being closed by a plug (26). In use the injection needle 5 and holder 4 are screwed further onto the vial neck 2 so that the needle pierces the plug 3 and the needle cover 7 is removed and screwed by threads 8, 22' onto the end of the piston rod 16. The piston 17 is then withdrawn (Figure 5, not shown) so that the liquid medicament 20 flows past one or more lips 18 on the piston to mix with the medicament 19. The mixture of medicaments is then injected in the usual manner by moving the piston 17 forward (Figure 6, not shown). The piston 17 and stopper 21 are of an elastic material (rubber or a synthetic material) and before use the opening 14 in the end of the syringe is closed by a cover or label (15). It is stated that the syringe may be provided with more than one stopper 21 dividing the vial into more than two medicament chambers.
